The interview did not start their separation, though it became a major public event in the breakdown of the marriage and part of the events that followed. The available evidence does not establish it as the sole cause of their divorce.
What happened before the Panorama interview?
The marriage was already in serious trouble. In June 1994, Prince Charles gave a televised interview with Jonathan Dimbleby and admitted adultery. Lord Dyson’s 2021 investigation later described the marriage as failed when discussing that interview. The couple had separated before Diana’s Panorama appearance, so the broadcast cannot be said to have initiated their separation.
In September 1995, Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, introduced her to BBC journalist Martin Bashir. Lord Dyson’s investigation found that Bashir used fabricated bank statements to deceive Spencer and induce him to arrange a meeting with Diana. The report also found that, by early to mid-August 1995 at the latest, Diana was already keen on the idea of a television interview. The deception explains how Bashir gained access; it does not establish that it created Diana’s interest in speaking publicly.
What did Diana say about divorce?
In the interview, Diana discussed her marriage, public role and personal challenges. Asked whether she wanted a divorce, she replied: “I don’t want a divorce, but obviously we need clarity on a situation that has been of enormous discussion over the last three years in particular.” The statement was not a simple announcement that she wanted the marriage to end. Why did the interview matter?
The interview was broadcast on 20 November 1995 and was watched by more than 23 million people in the UK, according to Lord Dyson’s 2021 investigation. Its scale made private marital conflict an unmistakably public matter. It belongs in the chronology of the marriage’s public collapse, but the timing and audience alone do not prove that it caused the divorce.
The broadcast was followed by institutional scrutiny of how it had been secured. In May 2021, Lord Dyson concluded that Bashir’s conduct was a serious breach of the BBC’s 1993 Producer Guidelines on straight dealing, and criticized the BBC’s later handling of the matter. Diana’s note dated 22 December 1995, which Dyson found genuine, said Bashir had not shown her documents or given her information she did not already know, and that she had consented to the interview without undue pressure. That statement concerned her own consent and what she had been shown; it does not negate the finding that Bashir deceived Earl Spencer.

What can we conclude about the interview and the divorce?
The chronology supports a careful answer: separation came first; the Panorama interview came later; and the interview became a prominent part of the marriage’s public breakdown. The evidence cited here does not establish that it initiated the separation or that it was, by itself, the cause of the eventual divorce. Sequence matters, but it is not proof of a single cause.
