Spoilers for the Primal season 3 first-look trailer and season 2 finale: Spear returns as a zombie. Creator Genndy Tartakovsky says the new season continues in the same world and timeline—not as a reboot—and that the first episode will explain what happened to him.
Is Spear a zombie in Primal season 3?
Yes. In a ComicBook.com interview published October 9, 2025, Tartakovsky confirmed the trailer’s reveal directly: “Yeah, Spear’s a zombie.” Warner Bros. Discovery’s official announcement describes Spear as resurrected in a new form, stripped of memory and humanity, and roaming the untamed world.

That upends the apparent finality of season 2, which ended with Spear dead after the climactic battle. The trailer establishes his return, but neither it nor the interview reveals the resurrection mechanism or when it occurred. Tartakovsky says the explanation is held for the first episode.
Is season 3 a reboot?
No. Tartakovsky describes it as a continuation: “It’s a different type of storytelling, but it’s the same world, same timeline, all those things, so you don’t feel it’s like a reboot.” The premise changes the kind of story being told without resetting the series’ world.

Spear’s new condition also gives the season a central uncertainty. The official announcement says he has lost his memory and humanity. TheWrap reported that Tartakovsky said Spear has no memory of his past, while leaving open whether memories might return in flashes. Neither account confirms whether he will recover his former self.
Why did Genndy Tartakovsky bring Spear back?
Tartakovsky had imagined Primal as a pulpy storytelling brand that could change its characters or direction every few seasons. After season 2, he considered a different path, but it did not work for him. He then reconsidered whether Spear’s story had ended too soon and connected the zombie idea to season 1’s “Plague of Madness,” an episode featuring diseased, zombie-like dinosaurs.
In the ComicBook.com interview, Tartakovsky said that once the idea clicked, he quickly wrote eight episodes, discussed the direction with his team, and received Adult Swim’s support. TheWrap separately reported that an earlier concept involving aliens and creation was abandoned because it did not click; according to the outlet, Tartakovsky returned to Spear after seeing viewers mourn the character and the apparent end of the story.
What will season 3 feel like?
Tartakovsky says season 3 is closer to the first season’s primal quality, while season 2 spent more time with civilization and humanity. He described the new direction as going “deeper into a darker realm.” The setting remains deliberately pulpy: prehistoric wilderness and civilizations occupy the same timeline.

He also considered a separate story set much farther in the future, but removed it because it did not connect organically to the season. The creator’s description points toward a darker return to the series’ earlier emphasis, rather than a change to a realistic or historically strict prehistoric setting. As he put it, “Expect the unexpected. It’s a wild ride.”
