Like a Dragon: Yakuza is Amazon’s six-episode drama inspired by SEGA’s Like a Dragon games, but it tells an original-script story rather than recreating a game scene by scene. Actor Ryoma Takeuchi, director Masaharu Take and executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama have each described the commitment they brought to the adaptation.
What is Prime Video’s Like a Dragon: Yakuza?
Like a Dragon: Yakuza is the English title of the Amazon Original drama announced in Japan as Ryū ga Gotoku: Beyond the Game. Based on SEGA’s Like a Dragon game series, the drama follows Kazuma Kiryu and his childhood friends across two periods, 1995 and 2005. Amazon describes it as an original-script story, not a scene-for-scene retelling of a game. Amazon’s October 2024 announcement
That distinction matters to viewers familiar with the games: the series draws on the franchise and its central character, while presenting the story through a scripted television drama rather than the player-controlled viewpoint of a game.
Who plays Kiryu in Like a Dragon: Yakuza?
Ryoma Takeuchi plays Kazuma Kiryu, and Kento Kaku plays Akira Nishikiyama. Amazon’s principal cast list also includes Yuumi Kawai, Subaru Shibutani, Munetaka Aoki, Hinano Nakayama, Tomoya Maeno, Shohei Uno, Misato Morita, Saki Takaoka, Koichi Sato, Masaya Kato, Ryudo Uzaki and Toshiaki Karasawa.

What did the cast, director and producer say about their commitment?

The English renderings below are translations of statements in Amazon’s Japanese announcement, not quotations originally published in English.
Masayoshi Yokoyama: telling the story from where he is now
Yokoyama said he had never wanted to go back and remake the original work since beginning to write Like a Dragon. But, he added, if he could return to that earlier moment, he would want to make this work. He said that if he had to face the hardship, he wanted to depict the Kamurocho and Kazuma Kiryu he found most compelling now.

Ryoma Takeuchi: taking on the weight of Kiryu
Takeuchi said the property’s global popularity made him feel pressure. He was glad to receive the offer, he said, but also felt he needed to steel himself for the role. In the Japanese statement, he describes the project as one that would not work unless he approached it with a resolve to risk his life; that phrasing is a translated expression of commitment, not evidence of a literal physical risk.
He urged viewers to pay attention to Kiryu’s relationships and to the fighting scenes that carry the dragon imagery. Those are the aspects of his performance he singled out for the audience.
