The objections focused on the apparent association with a program then facing scrutiny over participant safety—not on a finding about Albanese’s conduct. At the time, reporting described police and workplace-safety inquiries connected to an alleged off-air incident; the sources cited here do not establish their final outcomes.
What did Albanese post?
During a visit to Perth on March 14, 2025, Albanese shared a selfie with MAFS participants Jeff and Rhi. His caption read: “I’m pro marriage- hope to have one this year!” and “Bumped into MAFS stars Jeff and Rhi in Perth 👩❤️👨”, according to PerthNow. The wording linked the encounter to his then-upcoming marriage plans. Nine’s 9Now also described it as a surprise selfie with the couple.

Why did some people criticize the photo?
PerthNow reported that some commenters objected to the photo because MAFS was under scrutiny over how participants were protected. The outlet reproduced reactions describing the post as “tone deaf” and questioning why the Prime Minister would appear to support a show that, in one commenter’s words, “clearly falls well short of protecting their participants.” Those are examples reported by PerthNow, not a representative measure of public opinion or an independent finding about the program.
PerthNow also reproduced a comment asking, “why won’t you address the femicide that is ongoing in our country????” That is a commenter’s criticism as quoted by the outlet, not a neutral description of the selfie or evidence about the inquiries.

What was known about the MAFS inquiries at the time?
On March 14, 2025, PerthNow reported that NSW Police had triggered an investigation and SafeWork NSW had begun a wider investigation into Channel Nine and production company Endemol Shine Australia. The reported inquiries followed an alleged off-air incident involving contestants and also concerned production practices.
ABC’s April 6, 2025 report likewise described police and SafeWork inquiries. These reports establish that inquiries were reported, not what they ultimately found. The cited coverage does not establish final findings, so the alleged incident and any conclusions should not be presented as settled facts.

What did Albanese say about watching MAFS?
An official Triple M Perth interview transcript, released on March 14, records host Carly Portch telling Albanese that Rhi and Jeff were in the building. Asked whether he watched the show, he replied, “Look, not voluntarily.” He said his fiancée Jodie Haydon was “completely addicted to it” and that the program was sometimes on when he got home. When asked about a contestant, he said, “Oh look, I just find them all interesting.” The transcript documents his interview remarks; it does not establish more about his private viewing habits.

In ABC’s April 6, 2025 report, Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth emphasized the responsibility of media organizations, saying: “Organisations responsible for media content, including reality TV shows, have a responsibility to use their powerful platforms to promote healthy and respectful relationships and ensure that content does not further harm victim-survivors, or perpetuate dangerous stereotypes around family and domestic violence.” Her statement addressed media content broadly; it was not a reported finding from the inquiries into MAFS.
