Coldplay added a second Perth concert after demand for its first show surged, according to a May 16, 2023, report by PerthNow. Then-premier Mark McGowan said the first concert was expected to bring around 20,000 visitors from interstate or overseas to Western Australia; that was a forecast, not a confirmed attendance figure.
Why Coldplay added another Perth concert
PerthNow reported that the first Perth date drew such strong ticket demand that Coldplay scheduled a second show at Optus Stadium. The report said the first show’s Ticketmaster queue broke the service’s highest-ever online ticket queue record in Australia. It did not give a queue size, and the record claim is attributed to the report.
At the time of the report, Perth was the only Australian stop announced for the band’s Music of the Spheres World Tour.
What Mark McGowan said about visitors and tourism
McGowan said the first concert was expected to bring “around 20,000 people from interstate or overseas tourists” to Western Australia. He also anticipated that visitors would spend on hotels and restaurants and take holidays elsewhere in the state, which he said would benefit tourism.

Those comments were made before the concerts. PerthNow reported an expectation of visitor spending, not a post-event count of visitors or audited measure of how much they spent. The estimate should not be read as the number of tickets sold or total concert attendance.
