What is Predator: Badlands about?
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the 2025 film stars Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as Dek and Elle Fanning as Thia. Disney’s synopsis describes Dek as an exiled young Predator who sets out to prove his worth by hunting the Kalisk. He encounters Thia, a severed and stranded robot who becomes his unlikely ally.

The setup makes survival and self-discovery part of the story, but its most consequential choice is who gets to be at the center of it. Dek is not simply the threat approaching human characters: he is the protagonist, an underdog facing a dangerous world and the expectations of his own people.
How does the film change the Predator formula?
Disney describes Badlands as the first film in the Predator Universe centered on the Yautja, and the first to make a Predator both protagonist and underdog. That is the studio’s characterization of the franchise shift. Earlier films generally built suspense around human characters being hunted; this one gives viewers more access to the hunter’s side of the story.

Dek’s exile and effort to prove his worth make the hunt personal, while his alliance with Thia creates a relationship across species and radically different circumstances. The result is less a straightforward return to the original’s hunted-human tension than a buddy-adventure structure built around two unlikely survivors.
What tone should viewers expect?
Expect a mix of science-fiction action, violence, and comedy rather than an unbroken horror mood. Trachtenberg has described the original Predator as a film that moves from military action to horror, slasher film, and science fiction. He said that embracing such shifts allowed him to make films in the Predator Universe that feel “unique and original and surprising.” That is his account of the franchise’s flexibility, not a guarantee that every tonal choice in Badlands will land.

Together, those responses point to a specific dividing line: viewers who enjoy the odd-couple dynamic may find the tonal looseness part of the appeal; those wanting sustained dread may find the comic stretches disruptive. These are individual critical responses, not evidence of a universal audience consensus.
Does Badlands deepen the franchise lore?
Its clearest expansion is a shift in viewpoint: the Yautja are no longer only an imposing presence seen from the prey’s side. Dek’s quest to prove his worth and the circumstances of his exile make his people and his place among them relevant to the story. That offers a different kind of franchise context without requiring the film to abandon its central survival adventure.

The setting is also distant. Time reports that the story takes place at least 300 years in the future, without giving a specific year. Trachtenberg said that choosing a far-future setting helped avoid continuity conflicts with Alien projects. The available reporting does not establish an exact date or a more precise placement in an Alien timeline.
Is Predator: Badlands worth watching?
It is a good fit for viewers interested in a franchise experiment: a Predator as the lead, an unlikely android ally, and a blend of action and comedy rather than a simple replay of the hunted-human formula. Its premise and partnership give it a distinct identity, while the uneven critical reactions to the comic rhythm are a reason to temper expectations if horror is your main draw.

A Disney UK announcement dated December 30, 2025 said digital services including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Sky Store would receive the film on January 6, 2026, with Blu-ray to follow on February 17, 2026. Those are UK release-announcement details, not a guarantee of current availability or dates in other territories; check local listings and retailers.
