Pras Michel was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison on November 20, 2025, after a jury convicted him on 10 counts tied to campaign contributions and two later foreign-influence efforts. The case centered on money from Malaysian financier Jho Low, including efforts related to the 2012 presidential election, the investigation of the 1MDB scandal, and a Chinese national. Michel reported to federal prison on April 30, 2026, according to the Associated Press.
What was Pras Michel convicted of?
A federal jury convicted Michel, whose full name is Prakazrel Michel, in April 2023 after a five-week trial. The Associated Press reported the verdict covered 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The U.S. Department of Justice’s case summary describes two broad strands of conduct; its account is the government’s characterization of the schemes and evidence, distinct from the jury’s verdict.
2012: campaign contributions
According to the Justice Department, Michel received $20 million from Low in 2012 and contributed it personally and through approximately 20 straw donors to political committees. The government said the contributions were foreign and conduit contributions connected to the presidential election, and that false reports were made to the Federal Election Commission. This case was not limited to what is often described as illegal donations to Barack Obama’s campaign: the government’s summary also included the alleged use of straw donors and false reporting.
2017: efforts involving 1MDB and a Chinese national
The Justice Department said that in 2017 Michel received another $100 million from Low. Prosecutors described efforts to end the investigation of Low and others over embezzlement tied to 1MDB, and to secure the extrajudicial removal of a Chinese national to China. The government also described Michel as acting as an unregistered agent, conspiring to commit money laundering, making false statements to financial institutions, and tampering with witnesses.

How much money was involved?
The Justice Department’s 2024 summary says Michel received approximately $120 million from Low over roughly five years in furtherance of the two schemes. It breaks that figure into $20 million received in 2012 and another $100 million in 2017. These are the government’s descriptions of the money and its alleged purpose; they do not mean every dollar was used in the same way.
Why was the sentence 14 years?
At sentencing, prosecutors argued that federal sentencing guidelines called for life imprisonment. Michel’s defense attorney, Peter Zeidenberg, recommended three years. Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly imposed 14 years, a sentence between those competing positions; they are arguments made by the parties, not general sentencing benchmarks.

Prosecutors argued the sentence should account for the scale and scope of the conduct. Zeidenberg called it “completely disproportionate to the offense,” according to the Associated Press. The Washington Post also quoted former Justice Department employee and lead prosecutor John Keller describing the case as involving efforts to influence two U.S. presidents and launder $100 million, “most of which he kept for himself.” Keller’s and Zeidenberg’s statements are advocacy positions, not separate findings by the court.

The Associated Press reported on May 1, 2026, that Michel had reported to federal prison the day before to begin serving his sentence. The AP also reported, citing his spokesperson, that his legal team continued contesting the charges. The available reporting does not establish the later status or outcome of an appeal as of October 8, 2026.
