Rio de Janeiro officially named the downtown route used by its major Carnival street blocks the Circuito de Blocos de Carnaval de Rua Preta Gil, commonly called the Circuito Preta Gil. A decree signed by Mayor Eduardo Paes was published on July 22, 2025, honoring the singer’s longstanding connection to Rio’s Carnival and her leadership of the Bloco da Preta.
Why the circuit was named for Preta Gil
Riotur said the tribute recognizes Preta Gil’s role in Rio’s Carnival and her years leading a megabloco in the city center. She founded the Bloco da Preta, which became part of the large street-party tradition along the downtown route. The city announced the name two days after her death on July 20, 2025, in the United States. Riotur’s announcement of the decree gives the formal naming date as July 22, 2025.
Where the Circuito Preta Gil is
The route described by Riotur starts on Rua Primeiro de Março, between Rua do Rosário and Rua do Ouvidor, then follows Avenida Presidente Antônio Carlos. The procession disperses near Rua Araújo Porto Alegre. It is a downtown route for megablocos, not a single annual parade or a venue with fixed entry times.
How the route differs from the annual schedule
The named route is the downtown corridor; which blocks use it and when they parade are set for each Carnival season. Riotur’s 2026 schedule listed ten megablocos, with events running from January 24 through February 22, ending with Monobloco. The announced line-up included Chá de Alice, Bloco da Lexa, Bloco da Gold, Será que Abre?, Bloco da Favorita, Cordão do Boitatá, Cordão da Bola Preta, Fervo da Lud and Bloco da Anitta. These were dates and participants for 2026, not a future schedule. Riotur’s 2026 megabloco guide is the source for that season’s program.

What the city planned for Carnival 2026
In its operational plan published on January 15, 2026, the city projected 458 street-block parades and more than six million revelers across Rio’s street Carnival. Those are advance planning estimates for the citywide event, not final attendance counts. The plan described municipal support for traffic management, monitoring, medical care, patrols and cleanup; it reported planned resources rather than measured results after Carnival. The city’s 2026 operational-plan announcement gives both ten and eleven as the number of megablocos on the circuit in different sections. Riotur’s season program lists ten, so the higher figure should not be treated as a confirmed total.
