Por Thozil is a 2023 Tamil crime thriller about a timid rookie and a hostile veteran investigating a serial killer. Its strongest hook is the uneasy police partnership and the steady work of the investigation; familiar serial-killer conventions and limited psychological depth may keep it from feeling wholly fresh. It is a good fit for viewers who want a methodical crime story more than a radical reinvention of the genre.
What is Por Thozil about?
Directed by Vignesh Raja, the film pairs DSP K. Prakash, a bright but faint-hearted rookie, with SP Loganathan, a reclusive and difficult senior officer. Their first assignment together is to catch a serial killer. The investigation gives the story its forward momentum, while the contrast between the officers supplies its central character tension.

SonyLIV’s official film listing describes the rookie as needing to overcome his fears and team up with a hostile senior cop. That setup is familiar police-thriller territory, but it gives the film a clear dramatic engine: the rookie must learn to function under pressure while the pair pursue a dangerous suspect.
Does the procedural make the film gripping?
The investigation is the film’s main strength. Rather than relying only on the killer’s presence as a source of suspense, Por Thozil builds interest through the officers’ work and their uneasy partnership. The rookie–veteran contrast gives scenes a second current of tension: the case matters, but so does whether these two can work together.
#1 Best Overall
The critical responses available point to a film that is engaging and carefully made, while stopping short of declaring it exceptional. The Times of India review describes it as convincing enough to enthral and engage; Film Companion highlights clever writing and filmmaking choices but also notes missteps. Those are distinct assessments, not evidence of universal agreement. Rotten Tomatoes collects the reviews at its film and review page.
What holds it back?
The basic ingredients—a serial-killer hunt, a rookie learning on the job, and a prickly senior partner—will be recognizable to crime-thriller viewers. The film’s craft and procedural momentum help those elements work, but they do not necessarily make them feel new. Scroll.in’s review raises a related reservation, hoping for more psychological depth beyond smart technique.
Rank #2
That limitation matters most if you want the killer investigation to become a searching study of character or psychology. If your priority is a competently constructed police thriller with a strong central pairing, the familiar framework is less of a drawback.
Content note
The BBFC’s classification advice flags strong violence, threat, injury detail, domestic abuse and disturbing images, including women being terrorised and bloody injury detail associated with murders. Its classification page is worth checking if you want fuller content guidance. This warning does not reveal the mystery, but the material may be upsetting for some viewers.
