Pope Francis’s final Jubilee message placed hope at the heart of Christian life: a strength to seek from God that can help people begin again, serve others and listen to those too often overlooked. His teaching on fraternity and care for creation gave that hope a social dimension. Francis was born in Buenos Aires on 17 December 1936 and died at the Vatican on 21 April 2025.
What was Pope Francis’s message of hope?
Francis made hope the central theme of the 2025 Jubilee, whose motto was “Pilgrims of Hope.” In the official bull announcing the Jubilee, Spes non confundit, he wrote: “Hope is also the central message of the coming Jubilee”. The text presents hope not as denial of hardship, but as a reason to keep moving toward renewal.

In a Jubilee audience on 11 January 2025, Francis described hope as something more than a fixed temperament: “Hope, therefore, is not a habit or a character trait – that you either have or you don’t – but a strength to be asked for.” He connected that strength with beginning again, fraternity, serving others and paying attention to people who are least heard.
Read together, the bull and audience make his message practical: hope is received, renewed and lived out in relationships and acts of service. Read Spes non confundit on the Vatican website or read the 11 January Jubilee audience.

How did responsibility and unity fit into his teaching?
Fraternity across divisions
Francis’s encyclical Fratelli tutti addresses human fraternity and social friendship. It treats relationships across social and cultural divisions as a serious moral concern, not merely as a call to be agreeable. Its place alongside the Jubilee message shows how hope can point outward: toward a society in which people recognize obligations to one another.

Responsibility for our common home
Laudato si’ focuses on care for creation and human responsibility in the climate crisis. Alongside Fratelli tutti, it helps show the breadth of Francis’s social teaching: responsibility concerns both how people treat one another and how they care for the world they share. The Vatican also lists Lumen fidei and Dilexit nos among his principal encyclicals; each addresses a distinct aspect of his teaching.

What happened in Pope Francis’s final days?
After a 38-day hospital stay for bilateral pneumonia, Francis spent his final weeks in the Vatican. On Easter Sunday, 20 April 2025, he appeared at St Peter’s Basilica to impart the Urbi et Orbi blessing and greeted people in the square. He died at the Vatican the following morning, 21 April.

The Holy See’s declaration recorded the time of death as 07:35 and listed stroke, coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse as the causes. The official Vatican biography records his birth in Buenos Aires on 17 December 1936. His lifespan was therefore 17 December 1936 to 21 April 2025; the “1925” in the supplied title wording is an error.
In announcing his death, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, said: “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His church.” That was Farrell’s tribute, delivered in the announcement, rather than a neutral biographical finding.
