Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things is a vivid, funny, and deliberately disorienting film built around Emma Stone’s fearless performance as Bella Baxter. Its imaginative production design and off-kilter dialogue make Bella’s journey feel like a visit to a self-contained storybook world. The film’s frank sexuality and its account of liberation may divide viewers, but its unusual voice is hard to mistake for anything else.
What makes Poor Things worth watching?
The film’s appeal is its combination of strangeness and charm. Wenlei Ma, reviewing the film for PerthNow, calls it “Weird, off-kilter and original,” and praises the comic dialogue, Stone’s unconventional performance, and the imaginative production design. Ma gives it 4.5/5; that is one critic’s score, not an audience consensus. Her verdict is that “Poor Things is a fearless film and the world is better for having it in it.”
The visuals do more than decorate the story. Their bright, fantastical settings make Bella’s travels feel like a succession of unfamiliar worlds, while the humor keeps the film from settling into solemn fable. That blend of visual invention and comic timing is central to why its eccentricity works for Ma.
Who is Bella Baxter, and what is the story?
Searchlight describes Poor Things as the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by Dr. Godwin Baxter. Bella leaves with Duncan Wedderburn on a journey across continents. The official credits list Yorgos Lanthimos as director and Tony McNamara as screenwriter; Emma Stone plays Bella, Willem Dafoe plays Godwin, and Mark Ruffalo plays Duncan. Ramy Youssef is also among the cast. Searchlight Pictures’ film page provides the official synopsis and credits.

Bella’s journey tests the rules and expectations placed around her. Ma reads the character’s development as a rejection of shame and control, and Stone’s physical, stylistically bold performance gives that arc its energy. The film invites viewers to consider what self-determination might look like when a person refuses the limits others set for her.
Where the film may divide viewers
Poor Things presents sexuality frankly, and its liberation framing is not beyond dispute. Some viewers may find Bella’s story liberating; others may question how the film handles agency and exploitation. These are genuine points of disagreement rather than evidence of a settled audience response. The same provocative choices that make the film feel daring to some may make it uncomfortable or unpersuasive to others.

Watch Poor Things if you enjoy visually inventive films, eccentric comedy, and performances that fully commit to a strange premise. If frank sexual material or the film’s approach to liberation is likely to frustrate you, those elements are central enough to consider before watching.
