Poor Things is a 141-minute, English-language film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, with Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the scientist Godwin Baxter. Its central draw is Bella’s changing view of the world: she leaves with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn and moves from discovery toward a purpose shaped by equality and liberation. Stone’s performance is the film’s anchor, while its surreal visual design and adult material make it an unusually bold, not-for-everyone watch.
What is Poor Things about?
In the official synopsis, Bella Baxter is resurrected by Dr. Godwin Baxter. She sets out on an adventure with Duncan Wedderburn, a lawyer, and develops a growing sense of purpose around equality and liberation. That premise puts Bella’s learning and independence at the center rather than treating her merely as a mystery for other characters to solve. Searchlight Pictures’ official film page lists Yorgos Lanthimos as director, Tony McNamara as screenwriter, Emma Stone as both lead actor and producer, Willem Dafoe as Godwin Baxter, and Mark Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn.
How does Emma Stone shape the film?
Bella’s developing perspective is the story’s main point of orientation, so Stone’s performance is central to how the film works. She is not simply playing a character reacting to strange events; the premise asks the audience to follow Bella as she encounters the world and forms her own ideas about it. Stone described the production as a long collaboration with Lanthimos, saying they had talked about it for years and that he was at her side throughout. That is her account of the working relationship, not a verdict on the finished film. Rotten Tomatoes’ cast interview contains her comments.
What gives the film its distinctive look?
The film starts from a Victorian foundation but stretches it into surreal fantasy. Production designer Shona Heath described the approach to the Associated Press as looking at the Victorian era “as if it had been written about in a sci-fi movie,” with an open-ended design brief. That helps explain why the world is better understood as an imaginative construction than as a conventional period recreation.

The craft credits are substantial: Robbie Ryan is cinematographer; James Price and Shona Heath are production designers; Holly Waddington designed the costumes; and Jerskin Fendrix composed the score. The combination of sets, costumes, cinematography and music offers a useful way to assess the film beyond its central performance. The credits and a 141-minute runtime are listed in the Venice Biennale’s film listing. Heath’s design comments appear in the Associated Press report on the film’s costumes and sets.
Is Poor Things worth watching?
It is a strong fit for viewers drawn to an unusual premise, an adventurous visual world and a story centered on a woman’s expanding independence. The main questions to consider are whether Lanthimos’s tonal choices work for you, whether the film’s approach to Bella’s development holds your attention, and how much grotesque or adult material you are comfortable with.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls the film “Wildly imaginative and exhilaratingly over the top” and describes it as a tour de force for Lanthimos and Stone. That is the aggregator’s consensus, not a universal response. Its audience page also notes that adult themes may unsettle or offend some viewers, and displays mixed reactions: some describe the film as weird and thought-provoking, while others object to its central conceit. Those comments are individual reactions, not a measure of how all viewers feel. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page carries the current consensus and audience text, which can change over time.
