Lord of Mysteries opened with impressive international distribution but a divisive creative choice: its first two episodes compressed a large stretch of the novel into a fast introduction. That may make the series harder for newcomers to follow, but later platform indicators suggest substantial interest. They do not, on their own, prove how many people watched or whether the show can sustain its reach.
What is Lord of Mysteries?
Lord of Mysteries is a Chinese animated series, or donghua, adapted from Cuttlefish That Loves Diving’s Chinese web novel. Crunchyroll describes its setting as Victorian-inspired and its mix of genres as dark fantasy, steampunk and horror. The series premiered on June 28, 2025, with two episodes; Crunchyroll announced that its English dub would begin with episodes 1 and 2 on July 25, 2025. (Crunchyroll’s series description; Crunchyroll announcement)
Why did the debut divide opinion?
Notebookcheck critic Ricci Rox argued that the two roughly 35-minute premiere episodes adapted more than 40 chapters of the novel. In that critic’s view, the compression sacrificed slower character and world-building scenes, leaving newcomers too little time to grasp the setting and its unusual magic system. (Notebookcheck)
This is a critical assessment, not the result of a measured viewer survey. It identifies a real adaptation trade-off: a rapid start can deliver plot momentum, but may reduce the time a new audience has to learn how the story works. Novel readers may bring context that first-time viewers do not, so the same pace can land differently depending on what the viewer already knows.

What do later popularity signals show?
The official franchise season recap, published September 30, 2025, says the series premiered worldwide across more than 190 countries and regions. It reports nine dubbed languages, subtitles in 19 languages, and platform rankings and awards. Those details indicate broad distribution and platform activity, but the recap is an official franchise source rather than an independent measure of audience size. (Official season recap)
In a September 14, 2026 press release, rights holder Yuewen reported 30 million global core fans, more than 90 million WebNovel views, a debut IMDb rating of 9.3, first place on Crunchyroll’s Summer Anime chart, and more than 100,000 Crunchyroll ratings. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited viewer totals. WebNovel views are not a count of animation viewers, while ratings and a chart position do not establish unique viewers, retention or profitability. (Yuewen press release)

Can it reach viewers beyond the novel’s fanbase?
International rollout gives the series a route to potential viewers who do not read the source novel: the recap reports multiple dub and subtitle languages, and the show has been available on Crunchyroll. However, distribution is not the same as accessibility. A newcomer still has to follow the setting, characters and magic system, and the premiere’s brisk adaptation pace is precisely where Notebookcheck’s criticism focused.
The available figures do not establish comparative audience size in China and international markets, or how many viewers continued after the premiere. They therefore support a conclusion of notable activity on named services and extensive international availability—not a definitive claim that the series has crossed over with a broad audience beyond existing fans.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us
- Early reception: at least one critic considered the adaptation too compressed for a newcomer-friendly opening; that does not establish a general audience consensus.
- Reach: official reporting describes wide international distribution and language support, while Yuewen reports strong service-specific indicators.
- Popularity: neither company-reported figures nor platform ratings and rankings independently establish total viewership, retention, or lasting comparative success.
The debut’s pacing gives a plausible reason some viewers might find the series difficult to enter, but the evidence does not show that this criticism materially limited its reach. Whether Lord of Mysteries becomes a lasting hit beyond its existing readership remains open; the signals point to meaningful interest, not a settled verdict.
