It follows Maxine Simmons, played by Kristen Wiig, as she tries to break into the town’s high society. The series is loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie; its fictional social world and plot should not be mistaken for a documentary account of real events.
What is Palm Royale about?
Maxine Simmons is an outsider seeking acceptance among Palm Beach’s wealthy elite. Apple describes the series as a story about the struggle to belong and what someone may sacrifice for status. The show is set in 1969, but its premise is a fictional comedy rather than evidence that its characters, club or plot events are historically real. Apple’s official series page provides the current synopsis and listing details.

Who is in the cast of Palm Royale?
Kristen Wiig stars as Maxine. The ensemble includes Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy and Kaia Gerber. Bruce Dern and Carol Burnett appear as special guest stars, according to Apple’s December 2023 announcement.
Abe Sylvia created the series and served as its writer, executive producer and showrunner. Apple identifies Apple Studios as the studio. The Associated Press reported that Sylvia said he promised Burnett her character would have more to do, then returned to the writers’ room and urged the team to make the role worthy of her. Wiig described Maxine as complicated while explaining why viewers could still root for her. The AP report attributes those remarks to the actors and creator.

Is Palm Royale based on a book?
Yes. Apple says the series is loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie. “Loosely based” is the key qualification: it describes the source connection without promising a scene-by-scene adaptation. Apple’s first-look announcement identifies the novel.
