It revisits five decades of celebrity coverage through archival stories, rare photographs and personal interviews, with 11 stars sharing the anniversary cover. ZINIO lists the special as PEOPLE 50th Anniversary Special; check its listing for current regional access and availability.
What is the PEOPLE 50th anniversary digital issue?
PEOPLE announced the special on April 10, 2024, marking 50 years since the magazine began in 1974. The publisher said the anniversary presentation included a full digital issue and an exclusive motion cover. It also announced a print newsstand release for April 12, 2024; that historical date does not establish whether print copies remain in stock. PEOPLE’s announcement
ZINIO lists the single anniversary edition as PEOPLE 50th Anniversary Special and labels its cover package “People: 50 Years of Stars.” The issue is a curated retrospective rather than a complete digital run of the magazine’s back issues. View the ZINIO issue listing
Who is on the cover?
The publisher named 11 cover stars: Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Viola Davis, Michael J. Fox, Dwayne Johnson, Nicole Kidman, John Legend, Matthew McConaughey, Serena Williams, Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon. The anniversary package brings together figures from entertainment, music, sports and public life rather than presenting a single cover subject.

What’s inside the special issue?
ZINIO describes personal interviews, stars at home, rare photographs, Princess Diana’s debut and celebrity stories spanning 1974–2024. Its contents include “Into the Future. But First, the Past,” a look back at the ’70s, “1970s: What We Watched,” and archival celebrity features. ZINIO’s issue listing and table of contents
The publisher also highlighted “The Next Power Players” and “How PEOPLE Changed My Life.” Those packages place contemporary voices alongside the magazine’s archive, making the issue a selection of people-centered stories as well as a look back at famous covers. In the release, Michael J. Fox reflected on the magazine’s role in chronicling his life: “PEOPLE has been this chronicler of my life, and I appreciate it. Remember that I was pretty funny and I cared, and all the other stuff just fell in. I just wanted to have a giggle—and I giggled a lot.” PEOPLE’s announcement
What moments from PEOPLE’s history does it put in context?
PEOPLE’s anniversary material traces the magazine from its first nationwide cover to defining celebrity franchises and major news events. These are publisher-reported milestones, not a claim that every item appears in the digital issue.
- First nationwide cover: PEOPLE identifies Mia Farrow on March 4, 1974, as its first nationwide cover star.
- Princess Diana: The publisher says Diana first appeared on a PEOPLE cover in 1981 and went on to appear 59 times—the most of any person.
- Signature annual features: The first “Sexiest Man Alive” cover featured Mel Gibson in 1985; the first “Beautiful Issue” featured Michelle Pfeiffer in 1990.
- September 11 coverage: PEOPLE says its 9/11 issue was assembled in less than 24 hours, became the first U.S. magazine on newsstands after the attacks, and sold over 4 million copies, making it the magazine’s best-selling issue.
These examples show why the retrospective is about more than celebrity images: the magazine’s covers and stories also document changing popular culture and moments of national attention.
Where can you read it, and is it still available?
ZINIO has a digital listing for the exact anniversary special. Its presence establishes a listing, not current purchase availability, price or access in every region; check the retailer directly for the latest status. PEOPLE announced the print newsstand date as April 12, 2024, but that announcement does not confirm current stock. ZINIO listing · PEOPLE release
Is the PEOPLE Magazine Archive the same thing?
No. EBSCO’s People Magazine Archive is a separate research database, described as covering 1974–2000 and containing 1,300 issues with indexed articles and cover pages. It is suited to looking up older issues, not accessing the 2024 anniversary special; the archive’s stated coverage ends in 2000. EBSCO’s archive description

Anniversary context beyond the issue
PEOPLE marked the milestone with PEOPLE: Celebrating 50 Years, its first museum exhibition, in partnership with Fotografiska New York. Announced for May 9 through June 2, 2024, it included original covers and photographs, multimedia, interactive elements, live events and panels. The exhibition has concluded, so it is historical context rather than a current visitor option. PEOPLE’s exhibition announcement
