Disneyland Park opened in Anaheim on July 17, 1955, with Walt Disney’s family-oriented ambition: to create a place where parents and children could have fun together. Since then, it has changed through landmark attractions, new themed lands and seasonal reimaginings. Disneyland Park is the original park; Disneyland Resort is the larger destination that later came to include a second theme park and other offerings.
What was Walt Disney’s idea for Disneyland?
Walt Disney envisioned a park where adults and children could enjoy themselves together, rather than a place designed only for children. Disney’s historical account describes that family focus, while its 2025 fact sheet says Walt hoped Disneyland would become “a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” These are Disney’s own accounts of the park’s purpose and opening-day aspiration.
How did Disneyland change over time?
The following milestones show how Disneyland Park developed through engineering, themed areas and changing guest experiences. This is a representative timeline, not a complete history of every attraction or business change.
| Date | Change | What it added |
|---|---|---|
| July 17, 1955 | Disneyland Park opened in Anaheim | The original park began welcoming guests, bringing Disney’s family-oriented idea to life. |
| 1959 | Major expansion: Monorail, Submarine Voyage and Matterhorn | The additions brought new forms of transportation, exploration and thrill rides. Disney dates the Matterhorn Bobsleds opening to June 14, 1959, and describes it as the world’s first tubular steel roller coaster. |
| 1966 | New Orleans Square added | A new themed area expanded the park’s distinct sense of place. |
| 1972 | Bear Country added | The area later took on the Bayou Country identity; Disney’s 2025 fact sheet notes its historical name. |
| 1993 | Mickey’s Toontown added | A land inspired by the world of Mickey Mouse and friends joined the park. |
| 1997 and 2001 | Seasonal attraction transformations began | “it’s a small world” Holiday began in 1997, followed by Haunted Mansion Holiday in 2001, bringing recurring seasonal changes to familiar attractions. |
| 2019 | Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened | A major themed-land addition extended Disneyland Park into the Star Wars universe. |
| 2023 | Mickey’s Toontown reimagined | The land was refreshed, illustrating that Disneyland’s history includes redesign as well as new construction. |
Which milestones changed the park experience most?
The 1959 expansion brought new technology and thrills
Disney Imagineering identifies the Monorail, Submarine Voyage and Matterhorn as part of Disneyland’s first major expansion. Together, they broadened the park beyond its opening-era attractions: visitors could ride an elevated transport system, embark on an undersea voyage or take on a mountain-themed coaster. Disney’s description of the Matterhorn as the first tubular steel roller coaster is the company’s characterization.

Themed lands gave Disneyland new settings
New Orleans Square, Bear Country and Mickey’s Toontown expanded the park with more strongly defined environments. Later additions continued that approach: Galaxy’s Edge, which opened in 2019, is a large-scale Star Wars setting rather than a single standalone ride.
Seasonal overlays and reimagining kept existing lands in motion
Disney dates the start of seasonal attraction transformations to “it’s a small world” Holiday in 1997 and Haunted Mansion Holiday in 2001. The 2023 reimagining of Mickey’s Toontown is another example of change within an established area, rather than simply adding a new one.

How is Disneyland Park different from Disneyland Resort?
Disneyland Park is the original Anaheim theme park that opened in 1955. Disneyland Resort refers to the broader destination, not just that park. Disney California Adventure, the resort’s second theme park, opened in 2001. For its 70th anniversary in 2025, Disney described the resort as comprising two theme parks, three hotels and Downtown Disney. That is a dated snapshot of Disney’s description, not an evergreen inventory.

Disneyland’s story is not only a sequence of opening dates. It reflects a continuing combination of new attractions, themed settings, seasonal versions of familiar rides and redesigns of existing lands. From the 1959 engineering milestones to the later expansion of the resort, the park and the larger destination have grown on different scales.
