Overtone singing can sound like one voice holding a low drone while a clear, higher note traces a melody. In the studied technique, the singer is not adding a second independent pitch source: the vocal folds produce a fundamental and its harmonics, and the vocal tract boosts one harmonic until listeners hear it as a distinct tone.
How can one voice sound like two notes?
A sung note is not just one frequency. Vocal-fold vibration produces a fundamental frequency—the pitch most readily heard as the voice’s low note—along with harmonics at whole-number multiples of that frequency. The vocal tract, shaped by the throat, tongue, jaw, and lips, filters this sound. Its resonances can strengthen some harmonics more than others.
In ordinary singing, the tract shapes the balance of harmonics that gives a vowel its character. In overtone singing, the singer shapes that resonance so one harmonic stands out sharply from its neighbors. The fundamental remains part of the sound, but a strongly emphasized higher harmonic can be heard as a separate, flute-like tone. That is why the voice may seem to hold a drone and move a melody at once.
The University of New South Wales Music Acoustics explanation illustrates the effect with an example in which the eighth harmonic is selected. In that example, the fundamental is 8 dB below the selected harmonic; the page also notes that hearing is less sensitive in the fundamental’s frequency range. This is an illustration for that example, not a general measurement for all singers or performances.

What changes inside the vocal tract?
The vocal folds supply the harmonics; the vocal tract changes their relative prominence. Adjustments described in studies include tongue position, lip opening, narrowing in the pharynx, and constriction near the velum. Together, these changes tune resonances that can amplify a particular harmonic.
A 2023 case study by Johan Sundberg, Björn Lindblom, and Anna-Maria Hefele examined one overtone-singing approach using inverse filtering, dynamic MRI, and video. The authors reported that the enhancement arose from close clustering of the second and third formants. In their observations, lower emphasized frequencies were associated with a raised, retracted tongue tip; higher ones with a less retracted tip that formed a longer constriction. Lip opening also helped tune the front cavity. These findings describe the studied singer and approach, not a universal mouth-position recipe.

Does the higher note move independently?
The singer can keep the fundamental fairly steady while changing the tract resonance to emphasize different harmonics. As the emphasized harmonic shifts, listeners can hear the upper tone move even though it remains part of the same voice’s harmonic series. The tract does not create an unrelated melody pitch from nothing; it makes selected components of the voice much more prominent.
Listening feedback can help a singer find and tune the effect. The University of New South Wales resource describes practicing with feedback from listening in a reverberant space or using a live spectrum display, and notes that the technique takes practice. These are aids, not a guaranteed shortcut or a single method for every voice.

Is throat singing really two notes?
It can sound that way, but the acoustic explanation depends on the particular technique being discussed. A 2020 study by Christopher Bergevin and colleagues examined Tuvan khoomei with sound analysis, dynamic MRI, and vocal-tract modeling. For the studied style, the authors described a low fundamental and a focused filter state created by merging two formants; they concluded that the biphonation arose from linear filtering rather than a nonlinear source. That result helps explain why an audible two-voice effect does not automatically mean two independently vibrating sources, but it should not be generalized to every tradition or technique.
Terms including “overtone singing,” “harmonic singing,” and “diphonic singing” overlap in some descriptions. “Sygyt” and “Tuvan throat singing” refer to culturally specific styles and contexts, not simply interchangeable labels for one universal vocal method. Shared acoustics do not erase those distinctions, and the studies described here are not a comprehensive history or taxonomy of the traditions.
