It finally claimed the festive top spot in 2023, 39 years after release. That extraordinary chart afterlife makes a serious case for the song’s place among the greatest Christmas classics—but longevity and popularity cannot settle a subjective artistic ranking.
A Christmas hit that had to wait decades for the top spot
George Michael wrote and produced “Last Christmas,” which was released in the UK on 3 December 1984, according to the WHAM! official history. Its original chart campaign was overshadowed by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The Official Charts Company’s chart history records five weeks at number two in 1984, rather than the Christmas Number 1 the song might now seem destined to claim. The wait ended in 2023. In its Christmas Number 1 announcement, the Official Charts Company said: “At 39 years in the making, Last Christmas now sets the record for the longest ever journey to the UK Christmas Number 1.” The milestone was not simply a belated victory: it showed that the song had returned to public attention across successive generations and seasonal chart cycles.
What the 2023 figures show—and what they do not
During the seven days of the 2023 UK Christmas Number 1 race, “Last Christmas” received 13.3 million streams in the UK. The Official Charts Company reported that this made it the most-streamed Christmas Number 1 in Christmas week. Its announcement also cited 5.34 million combined lifetime UK chart units at that reporting point: 1.93 million sales and nearly 413 million streams. The numbers establish reach and staying power, not artistic superiority. They also describe different things: a single week of streaming during a specific chart race and a dated cumulative chart-unit figure. Neither, on its own, ranks the song against every other seasonal recording.
Why “greatest of all time” remains an argument
There is a defensible case for the superlative. Few seasonal songs can point to such a long journey from a 1984 release to a first UK Christmas Number 1, alongside a record-setting streaming week in 2023. Its recurring chart presence is evidence that listeners continue to choose it when the holiday season returns.

But “greatest” depends on the measure. A ranking based on chart longevity, a particular year’s UK streams or sales, recognizability, songwriting, arrangement, or cultural associations could produce different answers. The chart record supports the claim that “Last Christmas” is an enduring and unusually successful Christmas song; it does not prove that every listener—or any single objective standard—must put it above all the others.

The song’s 40th anniversary brought another reminder of its continuing cultural life: Sony Music announced a “Last Christmas” 40th Anniversary EP in 2024. That release anniversary and the 2023 chart milestone give the song two distinct kinds of afterlife—official commemoration and renewed audience activity. Neither needs to settle the greatest-song debate for “Last Christmas” to remain one of the defining modern Christmas pop records.
