Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life was the first part of a two-program anniversary event marking 20 years since the sitcom’s 2002 debut. It premiered on Channel 7 and 7plus on Sunday, 20 November 2022; the companion retrospective, Kath & Kim: 20 Preposterous Years, followed the next night.
When and where did the special air?
Seven announced the event in October 2022 as a two-part celebration of the sitcom. The first installment, Our Effluent Life, aired on Channel 7 and streamed on 7plus from Sunday, 20 November 2022. 20 Preposterous Years, the second installment, aired on Monday, 21 November. These are the original broadcast details; the sources do not establish whether either program is currently available to stream. Variety Australia’s announcement report and ABC News’ post-broadcast recap cover the event.
Which cast members returned?
The principal cast reprised their characters: Jane Turner as Kath Day-Knight, Gina Riley as Kim Craig, Peter Rowsthorn as Brett Craig, Glenn Robbins as Kel Knight, and Magda Szubanski as Sharon Strzelecki. The event brought the original creative team back together: Turner and Riley created the sitcom, which debuted in 2002. Executive producer Rick McKenna described the reunion as “fascinating and delightful” and said it was “great fun getting the team back together,” in Variety Australia’s 7 October 2022 report.
What happens in Our Effluent Life?
The first program combines newly filmed scenes with clips from the original series and a retrospective look at the show’s cultural legacy. Its fictional plot returns the characters to Fountain Lakes. Because the house used in the sitcom had been demolished, the new scenes recreated the setting with green screen.
