Outrageous is a six-episode 2025 drama about the six Mitford sisters, whose family life becomes entangled with the political upheavals of 1930s Britain. Season 1 opens in 1931 and follows the sisters’ sharply diverging choices, including Diana’s relationship with Oswald Mosley, Unity’s attraction to fascism and Jessica’s interest in communism. Those events are the series’ dramatized story, as described in platform episode summaries—not a stand-alone historical account.
What is Outrageous about?
Created and written by Sarah Williams, Outrageous is a period drama from Firebird Pictures, co-commissioned by BritBox International for North America and UKTV. BBC Studios describes it as a six-part series based on a biography of the Mitford family. The story centers on Nancy, Diana, Unity, Jessica, Deborah and Pamela, and the personal and political fractures that grow between them.
Williams described the sisters’ generation in a 2025 interview: “The thing about the ’30s is that women had only just got the vote in the UK,” adding, “These women came of age when so much was changing.” These are Williams’s comments about the drama’s context, rather than a substitute for a historical source.

How long are the episodes?
The format descriptions differ by listing. BBC Studios announced the production as “Outrageous (6×60’),” while Apple TV lists six episodes with runtimes of 42 to 44 minutes. These are separate published descriptions; they should not be combined into a single definitive runtime claim.
Where can you watch Outrageous?
Availability depends on territory and can change. JustWatch’s UK listing, checked on September 20, 2026, showed streaming on UKTV Play and BBC iPlayer, and digital purchase through Apple TV Store and Amazon Video. That dated UK listing does not establish availability in other countries or guarantee that the services still carry the season.
Check the JustWatch UK Season 1 page for its current service listings, and confirm directly with a platform before subscribing or buying.
What book is the series based on?
The source-book title is inconsistent across the available descriptions. BBC Studios names Mary Lovell’s The Mitford Girls; a 2025 interview with Williams calls the book The Sisters: The Saga of the Mitford Family. Because those titles do not match, verify the title, author and edition with a bookseller or publisher before choosing a copy.
