Chadwick Boseman, nominated for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Gary Oldman, nominated for Mank, were among the five contenders. The ceremony took place on April 25, 2021, honoring films released in 2020.
What was the 2021 Oscar race about?
The 93rd Oscars recognized films released in 2020. The Academy announced nominations on March 15, 2021; winner voting ran from April 15 through April 20; and the ceremony followed on April 25 at Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre. The Academy’s ceremony record documents the event and its results.
The most visible contrast was between Mank’s broad support across categories and the outcome in lead actor. Mank was nominated 10 times, more than any other film, but nomination totals measure recognition across categories—not a film’s number of wins or the result of a particular acting category.
Did Chadwick Boseman win the Oscar?
No. Boseman was nominated for lead actor for playing Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; Anthony Hopkins won the award for his role in The Father. The Academy’s official results list Hopkins as the winner. Boseman’s nomination was his first, according to the Academy’s 93rd Oscars fact sheet.

The nomination also carried a distinct historical context. In its nominations sidebars, the Academy stated: “Chadwick Boseman, who died on August 28, 2020, is the seventh performer to receive a posthumous nomination.” That is the Academy’s description of the nomination’s place in Oscar history; it does not alter the award result.
Who were the lead-actor nominees?
The Academy’s nomination announcement named five contenders in lead actor. Boseman and Oldman were nominees, and Hopkins ultimately won.

That distinction matters when describing the race: 10 nominations signaled wide recognition, not 10 wins. The Academy’s nomination and ceremony records support a comparison between the film’s nomination tally and its eventual awards, but do not by themselves establish why one film or performance prevailed in any category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the official record can—and cannot—show
The Academy’s records establish dates, nominees, wins, roles and the posthumous-nomination detail. They show that Boseman and Oldman competed in lead actor and that Hopkins won. They do not establish private voter reasoning, whether Boseman was ever certain to win, or whether the final result amounted to a deliberate snub. Those claims require evidence beyond the official nomination and results lists.
