Netflix’s first-look teaser, unveiled at its Tudum event on May 31, 2025, presents the film as a dark, emotional take on Mary Shelley’s novel, shaped around the uneasy bond between creator and creation. What the first look shows—and what it means
The teaser opens with Isaac’s voice and introduces the story through the perspectives of Victor and the Creature. Netflix describes Elordi’s character as assembled from battlefield body parts who develops a consciousness independent of his maker’s wishes. That is the film’s stated premise for the Creature; the teaser is a promotional glimpse, not a scene-by-scene account of the finished story.

The imagery and framing point toward a character-driven adaptation rather than a simple monster reveal. Isaac described the film as “a dark and sumptuous emotional drama — a character piece sprung from the pages of Mary Shelley’s classic novel.” That is Isaac’s description, quoted by Netflix Tudum, not an independent critical assessment.
Who plays the Creature and Victor Frankenstein?
| Role | Performer | What Netflix identifies |
|---|---|---|
| The Creature | Jacob Elordi | A being made from battlefield body parts who develops a consciousness of his own. |
| Victor Frankenstein | Oscar Isaac | A brilliant, egotistical scientist and the Creature’s maker. |
| Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein | Mia Goth | Netflix’s cast guide lists Goth in both roles. |
| William Frankenstein | Felix Kammerer | Listed by Netflix’s cast guide. |
The official title page also lists Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, and Christian Convery. Netflix’s cast guide quotes del Toro on Elordi’s casting: “In order for the creature to have innocence, you need Jacob’s eyes.” The remark offers a clue to the interpretation: the Creature is not presented solely as a frightening body, but as a character with an inner life.

- Lending his burlesque touch to 1970s genre revision, Mel Brooks followed his hit "western" Blazing Saddles with this parody of 1930s Universal horror movies. Determined to live down his family's reputation, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (co-screenwriter Gene Wilder) insists on pronouncing his name "Fronckensteen" and denies interest in replicating his grandfather's experiments. Why del Toro returned to Shelley’s story
Del Toro has described a long personal connection to the material. Netflix Tudum reported at the 2025 event that he had pursued the project for 25 years. He said: “I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a kid and saw [star of the 1931 adaptation] Boris Karloff in, what became for me, an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system.”
He also connected the film to themes that recur in his work: “Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son has consumed my stories again and again.” Those are del Toro’s remarks as quoted by Netflix. They help explain why this adaptation centers on the relationship between Victor and his creation, not just on the act of making a monster.
The film is based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but it is del Toro’s adaptation and interpretation—not a claim of a complete or literal reproduction of the novel. Goth, who plays Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein, told Tudum: “I love material like this, and it all started with the book.”
