The Associated Press reported that the audience seemed upset, but the available reporting does not confirm that it booed. ABC hosts the official 1:53 acceptance clip.
What happened during the ‘Golden’ acceptance speech?
“Golden,” from KPop Demon Hunters, won the Academy Award for Music and Lyric at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026. The Academy’s ceremony record credits seven writers: EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seo, and Teddy Park. The Academy’s 2026 ceremony record establishes the award and credits.
In its contemporaneous account, the Associated Press reported that EJAE raised her hand and said, “Please stop,” as the play-off music continued. Other winners tried to speak; the lights dimmed, the broadcast cut to commercial, and the microphone was cut while two people were still trying to speak. AP described the audience as seeming upset. Its account places the interruption as fellow winners tried to speak after EJAE’s part; it does not establish that EJAE herself was cut off mid-sentence. Read AP’s account of the interruption.
Did the crowd boo?
The headline claim that the crowd booed is not confirmed by the reporting cited here. AP described the audience as seeming upset, which is not the same as reporting audible boos. The available account supports saying the audience reacted as the winners were played off; a definitive claim about booing would require confirmation from the ceremony footage.

Why was the win significant?
The Associated Press called “Golden” the first K-pop song to win Best Original Song. EJAE reflected on the significance in Netflix Tudum’s Oscars recap: “Growing up, people made fun of me for liking K-pop, but now everyone’s singing our song and all the Korean lyrics.” Read Netflix Tudum’s 2026 Oscars recap.
