Luffy is 19 in his current official character profile. His life’s defining milestones run from a childhood promise to Shanks, through his departure at 17 and a two-year training interval, to the ongoing Elbaf story. This is a canon chronology by story arc, not a day-by-day calendar: official sources do not establish the exact dates or total days of Luffy’s voyage.
Luffy’s age and the limits of the timeline
The official ONE PIECE.com character profile lists Luffy as 19, gives his birthday as May 5, and says he set sail ten years after the childhood events it describes. VIZ’s official One Piece series page identifies his departure age as 17 and his goal as finding the One Piece and becoming Pirate King.
Those are useful anchor points, not a complete calendar. The official sources do not give a date for every island stop or establish the total number of days Luffy has been at sea. The sequence below follows the canon story arcs. Manga chapter and anime episode ranges are separate navigation systems, not interchangeable measures of elapsed time.
Childhood: Shanks and the straw hat
In Foosha Village, Luffy meets Red-Haired Shanks, admires him, and resolves to become a pirate. When the Lord of the Coast threatens Luffy, Shanks saves him and loses an arm. Before leaving, Shanks entrusts Luffy with his straw hat and asks him to return it when he has become a great pirate. The promise becomes the emotional starting point of Luffy’s journey. The official character profile recounts these childhood events and the ten-year interval before his departure.

Departure at 17 and the East Blue crew
Ten years after his childhood encounter with Shanks, Luffy sets out in a small boat. VIZ describes the dream that motivates him: “As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates.” His voyage begins in the East Blue, where the opening arcs follow his pursuit of crewmates and the formation of the Straw Hat crew before they enter the Grand Line.
The official story index lists the arcs in order and provides manga chapter and anime episode ranges. Use those labels to navigate the opening saga rather than treating chapter and episode numbers as equivalent.
Grand Line: the pre-timeskip journey
In the Grand Line, Luffy’s search for the One Piece repeatedly draws him into conflicts affecting his friends and the communities they encounter. The official index orders the pre-timeskip arcs from the crew’s early Grand Line adventures through the escalating crises that lead to Marineford. Consult its chapter ranges for the manga or episode ranges for the anime; each is an adaptation-specific sequence.
From early Grand Line adventures to the war
The arcs build toward Marineford, where Luffy’s journey becomes inseparable from a desperate effort to save his brother, Portgas D. Ace. The war and its aftermath mark a decisive break in his life. This is the point to read or watch as the hinge between the first major phase of the voyage and the later one, rather than as a simple change of location.

Marineford and the two-year training interval
After the war, Luffy and his crew spend two years apart while he trains. The interval separates the pre-timeskip and post-timeskip story phases; it is not the total elapsed time of his voyage. The official profile’s age and childhood-to-departure account provide broad biographical anchors, but the official sources cited here do not chart every day of the separation or the wider journey.
The New World after the timeskip
When the Straw Hats reunite, they continue into the New World. The official story index places the post-timeskip sequence through Fish-Man Island, Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou, Whole Cake Island, the Reverie, Wano, and Egghead. Its chapter and episode ranges let readers follow the same arc order in either format without confusing manga publication numbering with anime episode numbering.

On Egghead, Luffy and the crew meet Jewelry Bonney, reach the island associated with Dr. Vegapunk, and become entangled in events involving the scientist and his theory about the Void Century. The official Egghead synopsis summarizes that arc.
At the time of the official index’s 2026 listing, Egghead spans manga chapters 1058–1126 and anime episodes 1089–1155. Elbaf begins at chapter 1127 and episode 1156, making it the current arc listed there. The official comics catalog also lists volume 115 with an Elbaf synopsis, confirming that the published story has moved beyond Egghead. Because the story is ongoing, this arc boundary can change as new chapters and episodes appear.

How to follow Luffy’s chronology
| Route | What you follow | How to navigate |
|---|---|---|
| Manga | The original manga sequence, numbered by chapter. | Use the chapter ranges in the official story index. |
| Anime | The animated adaptation, numbered by episode. | Use the episode ranges in the official story index; do not read episode numbers as chapter equivalents. |
For readers choosing the manga, VIZ’s official series page links to its manga offerings, including collected editions. A collected box set covers a defined portion of the series, not the ongoing story through Elbaf; check the edition’s stated volume range when choosing one.
