Orlando Bloom said the demanding preparation for The Cut left him hungry and, at times, paranoid—but “angry and paranoid” is not a verified direct quote from the interviews cited here. The 2025 psychological boxing thriller, directed by Sean Ellis, follows Bloom as a boxer known as Boxer, whose pursuit of redemption gives way to obsession and an unraveling sense of reality.
What Bloom said about feeling paranoid
In a 2024 interview with TheWrap, Bloom described how the role affected him: “I was really paranoid, I thought he was coming for me at different times in ways that was not happening.” He was describing his experience during preparation for the film, not reporting a diagnosis.
In a 2025 interview with ComingSoon, Bloom recalled intrusive thoughts and paranoia, saying, “I think the one surprising aspect was how much it did affect the old noggin. The intrusive thoughts, the paranoia, and all the things that you sort of imbue and see in boxers.” He also described himself as “hangry and hungry.” Those remarks help explain the headline’s shorthand, but “angry and paranoid” should not be read as his exact wording.
How much weight Bloom said he lost
Bloom gave approximate figures that differ slightly between interviews. TheWrap reported in 2024 that he said he went from about 185 pounds to 152. In 2025, Moviefone reported him describing a change from about 185 pounds to 150 pounds and a loss of about 30 pounds. These are Bloom’s recollections, not independently verified measurements; the varying endpoints are a reason to keep them approximate.

- From visionary director Ridley Scott comes this 4K Ultra HD Director?s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven. This spectacular epic of courage, honor and adventure stars Orlando Bloom as Balian, a young Frenchman in medieval Jerusalem during the Crusades. Having lost everything, Balian finds redemption through a heroic fight ? against overwhelming forces ? to save his people and fulfill his destiny as a knight
TheWrap reported Bloom’s account of a demanding routine: an hour and a half of boxing daily, an hour of cardio in the morning and another at night, plus weightlifting. In the ComingSoon interview, he described a nutritionist progressively reducing his meals and said he ate tuna and cucumber for what felt like weeks. These are accounts of preparation for a film role, not a safe or recommended training or weight-loss plan.
Why the film was shot in reverse order
The story was filmed in reverse chronological order to align production with Bloom’s changing physical condition. TheWrap reported the approach, and Bloom told Moviefone that working backward let him film while he was at his lightest. TheWrap also reported that the shoot lasted 25 days.

The Cut is a psychological thriller, not a documentary about boxing. Its premise follows a former champion trying to redeem himself after a career-ending defeat as obsession takes hold and reality begins to unravel. The film also stars John Turturro and Caitríona Balfe. ComingSoon reported a US theatrical release date of September 5, 2025, from Republic Pictures; Moviefone lists its runtime as 1 hour 39 minutes. Those release details do not establish where the film is currently streaming or whether it has a physical-media edition.
Director Sean Ellis told TheWrap that he wanted to explore “the psyche of an athlete” and the preparation, history, and “mind games of sport.” That is his framing of the fictional drama, not evidence that the film documents real athletes or endorses the methods depicted.

Ellis also told Borrowing Tape that he watched boxing films to understand and subvert familiar conventions. To help make Bloom convincing as a worn-down professional boxer, Ellis described using makeup, facial scarring, altered ears and nose, and an Irish accent. He also said the film includes an Easter egg referencing Bloom’s earlier boxing role in The Calcium Kid, and that they filmed in a gym used for scenes from that earlier movie.
