Imane Khelif filed a criminal complaint in France over alleged online harassment after the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her lawyer confirmed that J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk were mentioned in the complaint, but the available reporting does not establish that either was sued as a civil defendant, charged with a crime, or found liable. The Paris prosecutor’s office opened an investigation in August 2024; the complaint’s later disposition is not established by the sources cited here.

What Khelif filed—and who was mentioned

After winning the women’s 66-kilogram boxing gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif filed a French criminal complaint concerning alleged aggravated cyber harassment and online abuse. Variety reported that her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, confirmed Rowling and Musk were mentioned. Boudi told the outlet: “J. K. Rowling and Elon Musk are named in the lawsuit, among others.” That was his description of the complaint, not a court finding.

The distinction matters: reporting described the complaint as directed against X, or against unknown persons. Boudi said that formulation under French law allows investigators to examine who was behind posts, including people using pseudonyms. Mention in a complaint is not the same as being formally charged.

What prosecutors did

The Associated Press reported that the Paris prosecutor’s office received the complaint and opened an investigation in August 2024. The reported allegations included cyber harassment based on gender, public insults based on gender, public incitement to discrimination, and public insults based on origin. These are allegations under investigation, not findings that any person committed an offense.

In a separate account, Le Monde reported that the complaint said messages on X had exceeded “100 million views.” That is a figure attributed to the complaint as reported by the newspaper, not an independently audited platform metric. Boudi told Le Monde: “The investigation will have to determine who was behind this misogynistic, racist, and sexist campaign, as well as those who fueled this digital lynching.”

How to describe the case accurately

Procedural question What the reporting establishes
Was it a civil lawsuit against Rowling and Musk? No. The reporting describes a French criminal complaint against X or unknown persons; Khelif’s lawyer said Rowling and Musk were mentioned.
Were Rowling or Musk charged? The cited reporting does not establish that either was charged.
Did prosecutors act? Yes. The Paris prosecutor’s office opened an investigation in August 2024, according to AP.
Was guilt established? No finding of guilt is established by the cited reporting.
What is the complaint’s later status? The cited sources do not establish its final or current disposition.

Why Khelif faced online scrutiny

Khelif’s eligibility for the women’s boxing competition became a major online controversy after her bout with Italy’s Angela Carini. The International Olympic Committee supported Khelif’s eligibility to compete in Paris. Separately, the International Boxing Association had disqualified her from its 2023 world championships under criteria it did not fully disclose publicly. Those are distinct organizational decisions; neither makes disputed claims about Khelif’s sex or eligibility established fact.

What remains unknown

The reporting establishes that an investigation opened in August 2024, but it does not establish what happened afterward in this specific complaint. That uncertainty should not be filled by treating later, separate French investigations concerning X as the outcome of Khelif’s case. Without a newer authoritative account of this complaint, its disposition remains unverified.
