Reports in October 2025 said an education authority in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia had opened disciplinary proceedings after a teacher on sick leave appeared on television cooking programs. The reporting describes an inquiry, not a finding of misconduct. A central question—whether the programs were filmed or broadcast during the leave—was still unresolved in the accessible accounts.
What was reported about the case?
On 27 October 2025, blue News reported that disciplinary proceedings were underway after a teacher from North Rhine-Westphalia appeared on cooking television while on sick leave. The report said the authority had requested a written explanation and did not disclose personal details, citing data protection. blue News’ 27 October report.
A 7 November 2025 account by Indian Defence Review named the teacher as “Dominik W.” and identified the programs as Das perfekte Dinner and Die Küchenschlacht. Those details appear in that single secondary report and are not independently confirmed by an accessible primary source. Indian Defence Review’s 7 November account.
Why does filming date matter?
The blue News report said the authority wanted to establish whether the programs were recorded earlier or broadcast during the sick-leave period. A broadcast date alone does not establish when a program was filmed. The accessible reporting does not resolve the timing, so it cannot show whether the teacher took part in filming while on leave.

Has the teacher been found to have done anything wrong?
The reports describe disciplinary proceedings and a request for a written response; they do not report a final finding, penalty, or completed decision. An investigation is not proof that a person breached employment rules. The phrase “national scandal” is headline framing, not an official classification or a concluded legal judgment.
The teacher’s diagnosis and medical advice have not been disclosed in the available accounts. Without that information, it is not possible to assess whether cooking or appearing on a program was compatible with the person’s health or recovery. Claims that the teacher faked illness or abused sick leave go beyond what the reporting establishes.

What was reported about teacher absences in North Rhine-Westphalia?
In October 2025, blue News attributed the following figures for civil-servant teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia to a recent report. The underlying primary dataset was not directly available in the accessible reporting, so these should be read as figures reported by blue News, not independently verified counts:
| Absence measure | Figure reported by blue News in October 2025 |
|---|---|
| Teachers on sick leave | 1,388 |
| Absent for more than six months | 745 |
| Absent for around a year | 582 |
| Absent for more than three years | 47 |
| Absent for at least five years | 14 |
The report presents these as separate categories; they should not be added together or treated as mutually exclusive without further information about how the underlying figures were compiled.

What remains unknown?
- When the cooking programs were filmed, and whether filming overlapped with the leave period.
- What the authority concluded after requesting the teacher’s response.
- Whether any disciplinary measure followed.
- The teacher’s health circumstances, which were not disclosed in the accessible reports.
The available accounts therefore support a limited conclusion: an inquiry into reported television appearances was described in 2025, but its outcome and the key timing detail were not established in those reports.
