Norman Reedus sees Daryl Dixon’s kiss with Isabelle as an uncertain experiment, not a declaration that they are now a couple. In an Entertainment Weekly interview published October 7, 2024, and syndicated by AOL, Reedus describes Daryl as testing a possibility he has never really considered: whether he might want a settled life with someone.
What happens in the kissing scene?
The moment comes in season 2, episode 2, “Moulin Rouge,” of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol. Daryl invites Isabelle, played by Clémence Poésy, to travel with him back to America. She initially declines, but after the Nest tries to have them killed and her faith is shaken, she accepts. Daryl then leans in to kiss her. The kiss briefly pauses before continuing.

What does Reedus say the kiss means?
Reedus frames the kiss as Daryl trying out an unfamiliar possibility, rather than making a commitment. Daryl has spent much of his life running and fighting; the scene finds him considering whether he might have wanted a more settled life with someone. As Reedus puts it in the interview, “He’s never got to do this before and he doesn’t know what it means.”
That uncertainty matters: Reedus does not describe the scene as an instant love connection. He sees it as part of Daryl questioning the broader direction of his life. The kiss tells viewers that Daryl is willing to explore the possibility of intimacy; it does not, by itself, settle what happens between him and Isabelle.

How did Reedus and Poésy approach filming it?
Reedus says he and Poésy did not talk extensively about the kiss beforehand. Each understood the scene, and their focus was on what their characters were looking at and discussing. That account places the moment within the characters’ circumstances rather than treating it as a declaration that their relationship has already been defined.

Daryl’s on-screen romantic history includes Leah, whom he became involved with during season 10 of The Walking Dead and eventually killed. That history gives the scene with Isabelle added weight for viewers, but it does not establish that this new connection will last. Reedus also says he does not see Daryl as the same kind of character as some others in the Walking Dead universe.
