North of North is a warm, community-minded comedy about an Inuk mother rebuilding her life in a fictional Nunavut town. Its small-town sitcom setup gives the series room to explore family, work and local entanglements, while its Inuit creators and Iqaluit production give the setting a perspective rarely seen in mainstream television. The show offers a specific story, not a stand-in for every Inuit community.
What is North of North about?
The 2025 series follows Siaja, played by Anna Lambe, as she leaves her marriage and tries to make a fresh start with her young daughter in Ice Cove. She needs work and a place to live, while navigating family ties and the business of a close-knit community. CBC’s series description also points to long-kept secrets and the difficulty of keeping private matters private in a town where everyone knows one another’s business.

The premise is familiar sitcom territory—an upheaval, a new start and a community full of complications—but the show’s particular setting and relationships shape how that engine works. Siaja’s efforts to build a life are not isolated from the people around her: family and community are part of both the support system and the pressure.
Where does the series take place?
Ice Cove is fictional, not a real Nunavut town. Netflix says creators Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril chose an imagined community because Nunavut is diverse and Inuit communities differ. That choice lets the series build a setting for its characters without presenting one town as a universal picture of Inuit life.

- Movie Title: Northern Exposure: The Complete Series
The production filmed mainly in Iqaluit, Nunavut’s capital. Netflix describes it as the first production of its scale filmed in the Arctic Canadian territory; that scale-qualified description should not be turned into a claim that it was the first production of any kind made in the Arctic.
Who made the show, and why does that matter?
MacDonald and Arnaquq-Baril created North of North. It stars Lambe, Maika Harper and Braeden Clarke, and is co-produced with CBC in partnership with APTN. Red Marrow Media and Northwood Entertainment are the production companies. Netflix identifies the series as its first Canadian original series.

The creators’ relationship to the world represented on screen is important context for a review of the show’s perspective. Arnaquq-Baril said the creators wanted Inuit viewers to feel seen and represented. That intention matters, but it does not make a comedy a documentary or mean one fictional community can represent all Inuit experience. The imagined setting and the creators’ own perspective are best understood together.
What did filming in Nunavut involve?
Netflix’s 2025 account of the production describes a substantial local footprint. The company says the production used 20 shooting locations across Nunavut and Toronto over 61 days. It reports that 500 local people worked as background actors; more than 300 Canadian crew members and over 225 Canadian vendors worked on the production, including more than 60 vendors from Nunavut. Netflix also puts the production’s Gross Value Added Impact at more than $23 million.

These are figures reported by Netflix, not independently audited measurements established here. They give useful context about the production’s reach, but they should not be confused with a measure of how fully the show represents life across the territory.
How was the series received?
APTN, citing Netflix’s June 2025 engagement report, said the series reached No. 9 on Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series during its April 2025 launch week, appeared in the Top 10 in 33 countries and drew nearly 9 million views from April through June 2025. Those are dated launch-period figures, not current viewership totals. APTN also reported that it was CBC Gem’s most-watched new series since the platform launched and that it won five awards at the 2025 Directors Guild of Canada Awards.

How and when can you watch it?
Season 1 has eight episodes. APTN says Canadians can stream it on APTN+, CBC Gem and Netflix; availability differs by territory, so viewers elsewhere should check their local services. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on November 5, 2026. Netflix’s October 7, 2026 update describes the new season as eight episodes of 30 minutes each. APTN’s earlier announcement said the season would premiere on APTN, CBC and Netflix later in 2026; the specific November 5 date is Netflix’s stated date for its own service.
