Its corpse-like Count Orlok, oppressive shadows and carefully built period world revive the gothic monster’s power—but the film’s deliberately heightened style can also keep viewers at an emotional distance. Whether that trade-off works is the heart of this spoiler-light review.
What is Nosferatu about?
Written and directed by Robert Eggers, the 2024 film is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and a vampire infatuated with her, according to Focus Features’ official film page. Lily-Rose Depp plays the young woman, Ellen Hutter; Bill Skarsgård plays Count Orlok, with Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe among the principal cast.
This is a remake that knows it is working in the shadow of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic. Peter Bradshaw’s Guardian review calls the new film a respectful homage. That relationship matters, but it does not reduce Eggers’s film to a simple retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula: its stated premise and its approach to the vampire are distinctly shaped by Eggers’s own gothic sensibility.
Is Nosferatu scary?
It is built to unsettle through images and atmosphere more than through a constant succession of jolts. In an interview with The Guardian, Eggers said he wanted to move away from the suave, glamorous vampire and return to folkloric accounts. “The vampire of folklore is a corpse. An undead corpse,” he said in the December 27, 2024 interview.

That intention is embodied in Orlok as a grotesque, forbidding presence rather than a romantic lead. Bradshaw praises the monster and the film’s handsome, stylised photography, noting how Orlok is held partly in shadow and recalling an eerie moonlit hallucination early on. The visual restraint makes the creature feel like something glimpsed at the edge of a nightmare.
The effect is not guaranteed to make every viewer feel frightened. The same precision that creates dread can make the film feel self-conscious. In its review, the Associated Press appreciates the period imagery but finds the dialogue stylised and often stilted, and the storytelling overly dramatic. If you want naturalistic performances or a fast-moving horror plot, the film’s deliberate pace and mannered choices may leave you admiring its surface more than feeling drawn into its characters.

How does the 2024 film compare with the 1922 classic?
Eggers’s version is a large-scale, visually elaborate homage rather than an attempt to erase Murnau’s silent film or prove itself superior to it. The older film’s place in the Dracula tradition is relevant context, but the new Nosferatu is best understood on its own terms: as Eggers’s interpretation of a folkloric vampire story, made with a contemporary production’s scale and a strikingly composed image.
The central comparison is one of method and feeling. Murnau’s silent images established a lasting vocabulary for screen vampires; Eggers draws on that legacy while making Orlok more bodily and grotesque. Bradshaw sees the new film balancing stylisation against genuine scare power, while the AP review emphasizes how its heightened style can create distance. These are different critical responses, not a consensus verdict: viewers who enjoy deliberate visual composition may find the approach immersive, while others may prefer the silent original’s starkness or a more emotionally direct remake.

How does the period setting support the horror?
The story takes place in Germany in 1838. Costume designer Linda Muir told Focus Features that her work drew on historical material, including 19th-century household manuals and 16th-century portraiture. That research helps explain the film’s considered period texture, but it is not evidence that every detail should be read as a claim of strict historical accuracy.
The period world is part of the pressure the film builds: an old, enclosed setting makes the supernatural feel less like an interruption of ordinary life than a force that has always been waiting just beyond it. The AP review likewise singles out the contrast between the German town and bleak mountain landscapes as a memorable part of the film’s look.

Runtime, rating and home viewing
The Associated Press reports a runtime of 133 minutes and an R rating for bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content. Those are details as reported in AP’s December 2024 review; rating listings can vary by territory or edition.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s January 21, 2025 release announcement said the film was then available to buy or rent digitally in the United States, with 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD releases scheduled for February 18, 2025. The announcement describes an extended cut and bonus materials, including deleted and behind-the-scenes footage and Robert Eggers’s director commentary, with specified bonus content at participating retailers. It confirms the formats announced at that time, not current stock, present-day service availability or distribution in every country.
