She reported that he had suffered a devastating stroke in June 2023 and was receiving 24/7 medical care, but that dated statement does not confirm his status on October 8, 2026. The careful answer is that his present-day status cannot be verified from the available direct updates.
What Valéria Chomsky reported
In a statement published by CounterPunch on February 9, 2026, Valéria Chomsky wrote that her husband, then 97, had suffered a “devastating stroke” in June 2023. She said he was under 24/7 medical care and “completely unable to speak or engage in public discourse.” This is a family account of his condition as of that statement, not a medical record or a later update. Read the statement published by CounterPunch.
What that update does—and does not—establish
The statement is evidence of what Valéria Chomsky reported on February 9, 2026. It does not establish whether Chomsky is alive today, nor does it provide a subsequent prognosis or account of his condition. It would therefore be inaccurate to treat “isn’t dead yet” as a verified real-time status claim.
How to interpret later coverage of death rumors
A matching-title article published by Position is Everything on May 20, 2026 discusses online death rumors and the difficulty of distinguishing reliable health information from speculation. It is secondary coverage, not a direct family or official confirmation, and it does not establish Chomsky’s status on October 8, 2026. Read the Position is Everything article.

For readers who came looking for his ideas rather than a status update, Penguin Books Australia lists The Myth of American Idealism, by Noam Chomsky and Nathan J. Robinson, with a publication date of May 5, 2026. The listing is a reading reference, not evidence about Chomsky’s health. See the publisher’s listing.
