CNN’s bet on CNN Max was about reach, not proof that viewers would seek out another news service: put a live CNN stream inside a large entertainment app and make it available to people already using that app. The US stream ended in November 2025, and CNN has since launched its own streaming subscription, All Access. The public information available does not show whether CNN Max attracted enough viewers, subscribers, or revenue to succeed on its own terms.
What CNN Max was—and what changed
CNN and Max announced CNN Max on August 24, 2023, as a 24/7 live news stream inside Max in the United States, with a planned launch date of September 27, 2023. It was an in-app destination, not a separate CNN subscription.
CNN later announced that the US live stream would stop being available on HBO Max beginning November 17, 2025. Selected CNN Originals would remain on the service. CNN’s current direct-to-consumer streaming offer is All Access, launched in the United States on October 28, 2025. CNN’s 2023 announcement and its October 2025 update describe the change.
Why put CNN inside a broad streaming app?
CNN’s stated rationale was distribution: Max already had a large streaming audience, which CNN characterized as significantly younger and additive to its traditional-TV audience. In principle, placing news in an app people already use can lower the effort required to find it and expose the brand to viewers who might not choose a news-only service. That is a plausible strategy, not evidence that the placement actually increased viewing or converted subscribers.

The approach also gave Max live news as part of its programming mix. For CNN, the trade-off was that the stream sat within a broader service rather than asking every viewer to find and subscribe to a CNN-specific product. The available public statements explain the intended reach rationale; they do not quantify the effect of that placement.
What CNN says it learned from the arrangement
When CNN announced the live stream’s end, Alex MacCallum, CNN’s executive vice president of digital products and services, said the company had “benefitted tremendously” from offering a 24/7 feed to HBO Max customers and had learned what those subscribers wanted from CNN. That is CNN management’s account of the experiment, not a published audience or financial scorecard. CNN’s announcement contains MacCallum’s statement.

The sequence suggests a shift in product strategy: from placing a live channel inside a general entertainment subscription to offering a broader CNN-branded package directly. CNN had also said in May 2025 that it planned to expand its digital subscription across CNN’s app, connected-TV apps, and CNN.com while continuing its pay-TV experience; at that point, it said it would remain on Max. The later change superseded that plan. CNN’s May 2025 announcement describes the earlier plan.
How All Access differs from CNN Max
At launch, CNN described All Access as a package of selected live feeds, catch-up and on-demand video, a library of CNN Originals and Films, and CNN digital journalism. CNN Max, by contrast, had been presented as a 24/7 live news stream within Max. The descriptions establish a broader range of formats for All Access; they do not establish that it is more popular or financially successful.

CNN listed All Access at $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year at launch. Its introductory annual offer was available only through January 5, 2026, so that promotion has expired. These are launch terms, not a confirmation of current pricing. CNN’s launch announcement gives the product details and launch prices.
What the audience numbers do—and do not—show
CNN reported several million livestreams across its digital properties on All Access launch day. That is a company-reported count of livestream starts, not a count of unique subscribers, and it says nothing directly about CNN Max’s audience. CNN also reported 122 million average monthly global unique visitors in 2025, including 94 million average monthly US unique users. Those figures describe CNN’s digital reach, not use of the Max live stream. CNN’s launch release reports the launch-day figure; its 2025 audience release reports digital reach.

Likewise, CNN’s 2025 release said it ranked among the top five cable networks for six consecutive years. That company-reported ranking makes “no one watches CNN on TV” an overstatement, but a cable ranking does not tell us how many people watched CNN Max or whether the stream converted viewers into paying customers. CNN’s audience release provides its ranking and measurement context.

Not from the figures CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery disclosed in the sources cited here. The key missing measures are CNN Max’s standalone viewing, subscriber conversion, retention, and financial performance. CNN’s decision to end the stream is a product change, not by itself proof that the strategy failed; management’s positive description of what it learned is not proof that it succeeded.

Warner Bros. Discovery identifies distributor fees, direct-to-consumer subscriptions, advertising, and content licensing among its revenue sources, but its cited filing does not break out CNN Max economics. That makes it impossible to compare what CNN or WBD earned from CNN Max with what All Access earns directly. WBD’s 2024 annual filing describes the company’s revenue streams without providing a CNN Max-specific result.
The practical answer to the skeptical question
The reasoning was that a broad streaming app could put CNN in front of people who were already there, without requiring them to seek out a news-only subscription first. But reach and conversion are different questions: the available evidence does not show how many Max subscribers watched CNN Max, whether they returned, or whether the stream produced sustainable revenue. The live CNN Max stream is gone; CNN’s direct subscription is now the relevant product to assess, and the information cited here does not establish whether it will outperform the in-app approach.
