Nick Gordon died on January 1, 2020, at age 30. His attorney confirmed his death but did not initially disclose a cause. Later reports citing an autopsy report said Gordon died from heroin toxicity and that the manner of death was accidental.
How did Nick Gordon die?
Gordon’s attorney, Joe S. Habachy, confirmed the death in January 2020 without giving a cause. The Associated Press reported that first responders found Gordon unresponsive in a hotel room in Maitland, Florida, near Orlando. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. CBS/AP’s contemporary report covered the confirmation and the circumstances known at the time.
In January and February 2020, later reports citing an autopsy report said Gordon’s cause of death was heroin toxicity and the manner was accidental. E! News and Global News attributed those findings to the report. That is distinct from what his attorney disclosed when confirming the death.
Who was Nick Gordon?
Gordon was Bobbi Kristina Brown’s former partner. Brown, the daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, was found face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub at a home near Atlanta on January 31, 2015. She remained in a coma and later received hospice care before dying on July 26, 2015. ABC News reported on Brown’s death.

What happened in the civil case over Brown’s death?
In September 2016, Gordon was found civilly liable in the wrongful-death lawsuit brought by Brown’s estate. A judge ordered him to pay $36 million in damages, according to CBS/AP and ABC News. The ruling followed Gordon’s failure to meet court deadlines, and the estate’s victory was by default.
This was a civil liability finding, not a criminal conviction. Reporting said Gordon was never criminally charged in Brown’s death. The estate’s allegations in its lawsuit should not be treated as a criminal verdict.

What was determined about Bobbi Kristina Brown’s death?
Brown’s medical examiner could not determine whether her death was accidental, intentional, or caused by another person, according to The Washington Post’s reporting on the autopsy. That medical conclusion is separate from the civil court’s finding against Gordon; the judgment did not establish how Brown became unresponsive or resolve the medical examiner’s uncertainty.

In confirming Gordon’s death, Habachy said: “While I cannot speak to the specific circumstances of his death, I can say that it’s been truly heartbreaking to have witnessed first hand the total devastation that drug addiction has wreaked upon a group of young friends, all of whom were loved and had immense potential.” CBS/AP published the statement. Habachy also characterized Gordon as having worked to stay sober and wanting a healthy life with his family; those were the attorney’s descriptions, not independently established medical findings.
