Hairstylist Adir Abergel called his idea a “baby girl Bouffant,” drawing on 1960s and 1970s glamour, including Studio 54. The height also served her one-shoulder, open-back Balenciaga gown: Abergel said he wanted the style to reveal the back while accentuating her hair.
What made the hairstyle a bouffant ponytail
The shape combined a high ponytail with lifted volume at the crown and a softly bent, flipped finish through the length. The Associated Press described it as a “voluminous half-ponytail,” while beauty coverage used “baby bouffant” and Abergel’s “baby girl Bouffant” description. Those terms capture the look more accurately than calling it only a wave style. The Associated Press’ event coverage places it alongside Kidman’s open-back gown.
The inspiration and the dress
Abergel told NewBeauty: “We drew inspiration from the iconic styles of the 1960s and 1970s, with a nod to the Studio 54 era.” Harper’s Bazaar also reported his “Baby girl Bouffant” description. The references explain the height and drama; the placement was also tailored to Kidman’s one-shoulder Balenciaga dress. Abergel said the open back was a detail he wanted the hairstyle to highlight, while still accentuating her hair. NewBeauty’s account of the look quotes the stylist on both the inspiration and the gown; Harper’s Bazaar’s coverage reports the look name and inspiration.

The reported routine started by preparing and smoothing Kidman’s natural curls, then building the ponytail and adding fullness. Virtue Labs’ January 5 recap attributes the following sequence to Abergel:

- Using a round brush, he smoothed her natural curls.
- He gathered the hair into a tight, high ponytail and incorporated extensions at the crown and back.
- He used a 2-inch curling iron to create bend and movement in the lengths.
- He backcombed the top of the ponytail for volume and finished with Virtue Healing Oil for shine.
NewBeauty adds that Abergel used a Denman Brush and Kristin Ess Soft Volume Blow Dry Brush while smoothing the curls. It identifies the extensions as BELLAMI Hair 18-inch Silk Seam Clip-In Hair Extensions in Golden Hour, and the iron as the Kristin Ess 2-inch Titanium Curling Iron. The extensions were reported as BELLAMI Silk Seam Clip-Ins, with NewBeauty specifying an 18-inch length and Golden Hour shade. Their stated purpose was added density and fullness at the crown and back. The Kristin Ess 2-inch Titanium Curling Iron was the named tool for creating the bend and movement; the sources do not establish that a particular tool or extension will recreate the same result on hair with a different length, texture, or density.
