The comment was not a claim that filming was always comfortable: Kidman also described the intimate scenes as exposing and frightening.
What Nicole Kidman said about feeling exploited
At a Venice Film Festival press conference on August 30, 2024, ahead of Babygirl’s debut, Kidman credited Reijn with making the work compelling. “That’s what made it so compelling, was being in the hands of Halina, because I knew she wasn’t gonna exploit me,” she said, according to Marie Claire’s report from the press conference.

Kidman added: “I mean, however anyone interprets that, I didn’t feel exploited. I felt very much a part of it. It’s the story that I wanted to be a part of, that I wanted to tell. And every part of me was committed to that.” Her explanation centered on trust in this director and her own commitment to this particular film.
Care and commitment did not mean every moment felt easy
Kidman also said there was “enormous care taken” during filming, describing a cast and crew who were gentle with and helped one another. Those comments are her account of the production; they do not establish that every participant had the same experience or that the work had no difficult moments.

In remarks reported from the same press conference, Kidman spoke of feeling exposed and vulnerable at the prospect of the intimate scenes being seen publicly. She said there were moments when she did not want to be touched or continue, even as she felt compelled to complete the work. Taken together, her comments distinguish feeling trusted and committed from feeling comfortable at every point.

Written and directed by Reijn, Babygirl stars Kidman as Romy, a married CEO who begins an affair with Samuel, a younger intern played by Harris Dickinson. Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde are also among the cast, according to British GQ and BFI Sight and Sound.

Kidman and Reijn have discussed the film through themes including sexuality, desire, marriage, power, consent and female pleasure. Reijn later said she valued the conversations viewers had after seeing it about their own feelings and experiences. These are the filmmakers’ perspectives on the work, not a guarantee that every viewer will interpret it in the same way.
