Recap coverage says Maggie believed she was protecting him, and that their separation and his rare blood disorder helped shape her choice. The reveal turns the case into a personal betrayal of Jane Tennant, whom Maggie had mentored.
Why did Maggie help Chinese intelligence?
Maggie’s motive was personal: Bao, the Chinese operative at the center of the case, was her son. According to an episode recap, Maggie had given birth during an operation in China. After she was captured and separated from her family, Bao was raised by his father’s family. Years later, Bao used their relationship to draw intelligence from her. Those family and medical details come from recap coverage; CBS’s official episode announcement establishes the espionage case but does not explain Maggie’s motive. The story nevertheless makes clear that her loyalty to Bao outweighed her obligations as an intelligence officer, even as she accepted that she would face consequences.
How did the case expose her betrayal?
The two-part story begins after Navy engineer Joseph Chan is found dead. CBS’s synopsis says Chan’s last meeting was with Maggie, Jane Tennant’s mentor and friend, who has been kidnapped. New Zealand intelligence case officer David Sola arrives after a lead links Chan’s death to a Chinese black-ops agent. In Part 2, the team investigates Maggie’s apparent role in helping a Chinese spy.

The reveal that Bao is Maggie’s son changes the meaning of her actions: she is not simply working with a foreign operative, but responding to a family tie shaped by separation. That does not undo the betrayal or the risks her actions created; it explains why she chose to help him.
Why was the reveal especially painful for Jane?
Maggie was not only Jane’s colleague. She had recruited and trained Jane as a CIA officer and served as a close mentor. Her apparent betrayal therefore threatened Jane’s trust in someone who had helped shape her career.

Flashbacks show their earlier relationship, with story markers 15 years and 11 years before the present-day case. As Jane’s career path changes, Maggie gives her a business card for NCIS agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs and says he can help her get set up at FLETC. TVLine reports that the card carries the handwritten message, “Rule 72: Always be open to new ideas.” TV Insider also describes Maggie encouraging Jane’s move toward NCIS. The gesture makes the mentorship—and the personal cost of Maggie’s betrayal—part of the episode’s central story.
