For Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the design challenge was to surprise players without losing the pleasure of replaying a course, improving their skills and discovering something new. In an August 31, 2023 interview with MobileSyrup’s Bradly Shankar, original Super Mario Bros. co-designer Takashi Tezuka described how the team tried to solve that problem.
Why familiar Mario surprises can lose their impact
Tezuka co-designed the original Super Mario Bros. with Shigeru Miyamoto, and later directed Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. In Shankar’s interview, he framed the challenge around a familiar pleasure: players encounter something unexpected, such as a pipe leading to a new area or a block containing an item. But repeating a successful surprise can make it feel less surprising.
Tezuka said the Wonder team set itself the task of finding new discoveries that could fill the role of those familiar moments: “And so one of the challenges we placed on ourselves, one of the pieces of homework when we began development, was to come up with new surprises that would fill the role of things like entering a pipe to go to a new area or hitting a block to get a new item.” (Bradly Shankar, MobileSyrup, August 31, 2023)
What the team wanted to keep
New surprises were not meant to replace the basic rhythm of Mario courses. Tezuka said the team wanted players to return to a course, become more proficient, and notice things they had missed before. He described those aims as connected: repeated play develops skill, and growing skill can open the way to further discoveries.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“But with that in mind, we don’t want to change the fundamental ‘fun’ part of what is Mario. And, of course, that is having players play through a course again and again so they become more proficient with the skillset. And of course, players, as they’re playing through and growing their skill set, will find all sorts of new discoveries, new interesting things, as they’re playing through these courses repeatedly.”
That is Tezuka’s explanation of the design goal, not a claim that every 2D Mario game used the same development method. The interview presents the balance as a goal for Wonder: change what players might discover while retaining courses that reward replay and practice.

A temporary rule against relying on past ideas
Tezuka said the Wonder developers set a period during development when they could not use enemies, gimmicks or gameplay elements from earlier titles. He explained that teams can otherwise lean on past successes, and that the restriction gave them a development environment they had not used before.
The interview does not quantify the effect of that rule or establish that it alone produced the game’s final ideas. It does, however, show how the team tried to make room for new concepts rather than defaulting to familiar ones.

Wonder Flowers turn novelty into a stage event
Wonder Flowers provide a concrete example of the approach. Shankar’s interview describes their effects as changing stages with new enemies, obstacles and set pieces. Nintendo’s official product page for Super Mario Bros. Wonder on Nintendo Switch also identifies Wonder Flower effects as a central gameplay feature.
Rather than treating novelty as an entirely separate mode, the game uses these flowers to alter what is happening in a course. That gives the player a new event to encounter within the familiar course-based structure Tezuka said the team wanted to preserve.

What “nearly 40 years” means here
The interview places the series’ beginnings in 1985 and asks how a series with that history can remain familiar yet fresh. It does not report a measured freshness score, a player-response statistic or evidence that every entry has remained equally surprising. “Nearly 40 years” describes the span of the series’ history in the interview’s 2023 framing; Tezuka’s comments explain the design problem and Wonder team’s response, rather than proving a numerical claim about longevity.
