The account comes from the theater’s manager and social media post; the reports available do not include Amazon’s explanation or independently document the decision. This was about one theater’s remaining screenings, not a reported withdrawal from theaters generally.
What the Lake Oswego theater says happened
Lake Theater & Cafe, an independent theater outside Portland, advertised Amazon MGM Studios’ documentary Melania with two provocative lines: “To defeat your enemy, you must know them. Melania starts Friday” and “Does Melania wear Prada? Find out Friday.” GeekWire reported on February 3, 2026, that the film had opened in 1,778 theaters nationwide and that Lake Oswego’s theater made 1,777 after its manager said Amazon pulled it from the theater’s schedule.
The theater’s Instagram post, as quoted by news outlets, said it received a call from “the higher ups” at Amazon, who were upset about how the marquee marketed the movie, and that Sunday would be the last day there. Manager Jordan Perry told TheWrap: “The studio was not happy and/or did not appreciate my take on marketing their film to our own public.”
Those statements establish the theater’s account of the call and the end of its screenings. They do not establish Amazon’s motive or the precise decision-making behind it. GeekWire said it had contacted Amazon and would update if it received a comment; KPTV reported on February 6, 2026, that Amazon had not released a statement about the incident. Those are publication-time reports, not confirmation of whether Amazon later commented. GeekWire, KPTV, TheWrap

Why Perry booked the documentary
Perry described the booking as a way to fill a screen, and said the theater’s irreverent identity made the choice amusing. GeekWire quoted him calling the film “this inexplicable vanity piece from the current president’s wife.” Perry also said he was not trying to persuade people how to vote; he described his aim as helping people be more “open-minded, compassionate, and well-informed.” Those comments explain his stated approach, not Amazon’s reason for ending the theater’s screenings. GeekWire
Local receipts are not the film’s national box office
Perry said tickets at the theater cost $11, with $5.50 going to Amazon MGM Studios per ticket, and reported that Amazon received $196 from the theater’s screenings that week. That is Perry’s local figure, not an independently audited total. It should not be confused with the film’s reported $7 million opening weekend nationwide, a figure GeekWire attributed to The New York Times. The Associated Press reported a $40 million production cost; that report did not provide a complete cost breakdown. GeekWire, Associated Press

What the film is—and what the incident does not show
The Associated Press described Melania as an Amazon MGM Studios documentary about the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump’s return to the White House. AP reported that it premiered at the Kennedy Center and was scheduled for U.S. and global theatrical release, followed by exclusive streaming on Amazon Prime Video after its theatrical run. That was the release plan reported in January 2026; the film’s current streaming availability is not established here. Associated Press
