A January 5, 2026 Collider report says Netflix excluded the 2013 film from its ad-supported tier because it lacked the rights to run ads against it. Netflix separately confirms that licensing restrictions keep some titles off ad-supported experiences. Availability still depends on country and plan.
Which film is the report about?
The title is Blue Is the Warmest Color, also known by its French title, La Vie d’Adèle. The French-language romantic drama stars Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux. Netflix lists the film as a 2013 drama and includes Salim Kechiouche among its cast. Netflix’s title page currently displays a notice that the title is not available to watch in the visitor’s country; that message is country-specific, not proof of a worldwide removal. Collider’s January 5, 2026 report says the film was among more than 100 titles left off Netflix’s ad-supported tier.
Why would Netflix restrict a film by plan?
The Collider report attributes this title’s exclusion from the ad-supported tier to Netflix not having rights to show advertising with it. Netflix’s Help Center policy explains the broader rule: a small number of titles are unavailable in ad-supported experiences because of licensing restrictions. Netflix’s policy supports that general explanation, but does not independently confirm this film’s status in every country or on every plan.
That distinction matters: a restriction on an ad-supported plan is not the same as a worldwide ban or a claim that the film is unavailable on every Netflix plan. The official policy also says ad-supported plans are not offered in every region.

Is it unavailable in your country or on your plan?
Netflix’s title page currently shows a country-specific unavailability notice, while the title-specific report concerns the ad-supported tier. Together, those facts do not establish a complete current availability map. Netflix availability can differ by country, and the cited sources do not establish that the film is currently available on any particular paid plan. Check the title while signed in from your own country and review the plan you use; do not treat a result for another region or plan as a guarantee.
What is the film, and why is it controversial?
Apple TV describes the story as an emotional love affair between two young women and lists an NC-17 rating for explicit sexual content. Netflix also lists NC-17; its Help Center defines the rating as inappropriate for ages 17 and under. Ratings are country-specific, so check the classification shown where you watch.

Collider reports that the film premiered in competition at Cannes in 2013 and won the Palme d’Or. Its account links the controversy to explicit sex scenes and public accounts by the lead actors about a difficult atmosphere on set. Those production conditions are reported claims, not findings established here; the available source material does not support presenting them as adjudicated fact. Apple TV’s catalog listing describes the film and its rating.
