Nissim Ezekiel (December 16, 1924–January 9, 2004) was an Indian poet whose writing brought the city, everyday speech, intimate relationships and spiritual doubt into modern Indian poetry in English. Born into Bombay’s Bene Israel community, he made English a way to examine Indian life from within. His importance lies not only in his poems but also in decades of teaching, editing, criticism and mentorship—and his legacy includes debate as well as acclaim.
Who was Nissim Ezekiel?
Ezekiel was born in Bombay on December 16, 1924, the third of five children of Diana and Moses Ezekiel Talkar. His parents belonged to the Bene Israel community and had roots near Alibag before moving to Bombay. His Indian identity and Jewish background are not competing explanations of his life: both informed the cultural setting in which he wrote.
He studied literature at the University of Bombay and later philosophy in London. After returning to India, he became a central presence in Bombay’s literary and cultural life. He taught, edited journals including Quest, reviewed books, wrote about art, worked in theatre and translated poetry from Marathi into English. His influence therefore travelled through institutions and personal relationships as well as through his published poems. For a detailed account of his life and work, see Graziano Krätli’s critical biography.
How did his life shape his poetry?
Ezekiel wrote in English about Indian experience without treating English as a barrier between himself and his surroundings. His poems attend to urban routines, social conventions and contradictions, relationships, alienation and the speaker’s own failures of understanding. The voice is often controlled and self-questioning; wry observation can sit alongside serious religious or philosophical inquiry.

His use of local idiom and Indian speech rhythms is part of that craft, not a cue to read the poems as caricature. The poems move between formal restraint and colloquial expression, and between the particular textures of Bombay and concerns that reach beyond one city. Sreekala Sivasankaran’s centenary essay recalls Ezekiel describing himself as Indian first and foremost; that is the essayist’s reported recollection of a conversation in the 1990s, rather than a recorded or independently authenticated transcript.
Which poems and books are useful starting points?
“Night of the Scorpion”
“Night of the Scorpion” is among the poems most closely associated with Ezekiel in public memory. It offers a way into his attention to community, belief and the ordinary language through which people respond to crisis. Read it alongside the poem’s careful shaping of a remembered scene rather than reducing it to a single message about superstition or faith.

“Background, Casually”

It places personal history and identity within a crafted poetic voice, making it possible to consider how the speaker looks back on himself rather than treating biography as a simple key to every poem.

Latter-Day Psalms is especially useful for readers interested in his later religious and philosophical questions. Ezekiel received the Padma Shri in 1988. A later volume, Selected Prose, appeared in 1992, reflecting how his literary contribution extended beyond verse.
What made Ezekiel influential—and why is his reputation debated?
Krätli describes Ezekiel as pivotal to Bombay’s literary culture from the early 1960s through the mid-1990s. He brought a sustained emphasis on discipline, self-criticism and craft to Indian poetry in English, while his work as editor, critic and teacher helped younger writers develop. The Indian Express reports biographer R. Raj Rao’s view that Ezekiel’s early modernism nurtured poets including Dom Moraes, Adil Jussawalla and Gieve Patel.

That influence should not be mistaken for sole authorship of a literary tradition or for universal agreement about his achievement. Krätli notes that some anthologists questioned his standing by the early 1990s. His editorial judgments and his support for bans on Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses in India and Taslima Nasrin’s Lajja in Bangladesh also drew scrutiny. Rao has criticised what he regards as a moralising tendency in many of Ezekiel’s poems. These are attributed assessments, not settled verdicts; they form part of the record readers may weigh alongside the poems and his contribution to literary life.

Ezekiel died on January 9, 2004. Krätli reports that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and admitted to a nursing home; further medical detail is not established here. His centenary invites a view of the poet as both writer and cultural worker: a maker of carefully shaped, self-interrogating poems and a participant in the Bombay networks that helped modern Indian writing in English take form.

The label “father of modern Indian poetry,” used in some centenary tributes, is commemorative rather than a neutral account of literary history. Ezekiel’s work mattered, but it emerged alongside other writers and traditions. The lasting value of reading him is in seeing how one poet tested the possibilities of English for Indian urban life, while leaving readers room to question his judgments, his choices and his art.
