One year after Megalopolis opened in theaters, Francis Ford Coppola was still trying to build an audience for the film while making consequential decisions about personal assets and business interests. He said in March 2025 that the money he borrowed and invested was “basically gone” for now; later that year, reports said he planned to auction seven watches and had ended a nine-year lease on a Belize island. Those events point to real financial strain, but they do not establish his total losses, prove insolvency, or show that the film alone caused every decision.
What happened to Coppola after Megalopolis flopped?
The film’s commercial performance fell far short of its reported cost. In September 2024, the Associated Press reported a self-financed production budget of about $120 million, an estimated $4 million opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada, and a D+ CinemaScore. The opening figure was an estimate reported at the time, not the film’s eventual worldwide total. The Associated Press’s September 2024 report also said Lionsgate distributed the film for a fee after other studios passed following its Cannes screening, and that Coppola covered most of a reported $15 million marketing spend.
Later coverage put worldwide box-office gross at roughly $14 million: the Los Angeles Times reported $14.3 million in October 2025, The Independent reported $14.4 million in November, and The Guardian summarized it as about $14 million in December. These are rounded figures from separate reports, not audited accounting. Production cost and marketing cost are also different measures; the reported $120 million-plus production figure should not be treated as a complete statement of the film’s total costs or Coppola’s personal loss.
What did Coppola say about the money he invested?
In March 2025, Coppola told the Tetragrammaton podcast: “I don’t have any money because I invested all the money that I borrowed to make Megalopolis. It’s basically gone. I think it’ll come back over 15 or 20 years, but I don’t have it now.” The Independent quoted that statement in its November 2025 report. It describes Coppola’s view of money he borrowed and put into the project; it is not an independently verified balance sheet or a measure of his full wealth, debt, or liquidity. The Independent’s report gives the statement and its context.

Why was Coppola selling watches?
In October 2025, the Los Angeles Times reported that Coppola planned to sell seven watches from his collection through Phillips, with the proceeds intended to support future filmmaking. The report does not establish the auction’s final outcome or proceeds, so the planned sale cannot be counted as money recovered from Megalopolis or as a settlement of its costs. The Los Angeles Times report also put the film’s worldwide gross at $14.3 million and its production cost above $120 million.
What happened to the Belize island lease?
In November 2025, The Independent reported that Coppola’s nine-year lease on Coral Caye, a 2.5-acre Belize island associated with Family Coppola Hideaways, had ended. A Corcoran Group representative said Coppola was sad to see the lease end. The report connected the development to financial strain after the film’s performance, but it does not show that Megalopolis was the sole reason for ending the lease. An ended lease is evidence of a business or asset decision, not by itself proof of insolvency.

How did Coppola keep promoting the film?
Rather than treating the theatrical run as the final word, Coppola continued to present the film to audiences. In August 2025, The Atlantic described a six-city speaking tour, including an event at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, as an effort to engage viewers with the film’s ideas and cultivate a following. That is the publication’s interpretation of the tour’s purpose, not a measured result showing that a larger audience formed. The Atlantic’s account of the tour explores the film’s attempt at a second life.
In December 2025, The Guardian reported a planned New Year’s Day screening and a proposed longer “director’s cut,” alongside Mike Figgis’s documentary Megadoc. These were plans and proposals as reported then; the available reporting does not establish their later status. The Guardian’s December 2025 coverage also described the film’s home-viewing situation at that time: it was not on common North American subscription-streaming services, while physical media had appeared in some other countries. That snapshot should not be read as a statement of availability in October 2026.

What the aftermath does—and does not—show
The record supports a clear account of a costly, self-financed film that earned little at the box office relative to its reported production budget, followed by Coppola’s candid statement about the money he had put into it, a planned watch auction, the end of an island lease, and continued efforts to find viewers. It does not provide audited figures for his total Megalopolis losses, personal wealth, debts, auction proceeds, or current liquidity. The reported events are significant, but they are not enough to calculate his net financial position or attribute every asset decision to one film.
