It puts conversation and close observation ahead of action: play as 16-year-old Tess Devine, explore abandoned family properties, inspect what has been left behind, and talk with her mother, Opal, on the drives between stops. The result is a story shaped around family secrets and the changing relationship at its center.
What is Open Roads about?
Tess and Opal uncover old notes and letters in their attic, setting them on a road trip to visit abandoned family properties. Their investigation leads into family secrets, old burglaries and a purported lost treasure near the Canadian border. The mystery gives the journey a destination, but the mother-daughter relationship is also central to the story.
The player experiences events as Tess. Rather than framing the trip as a conventional action adventure, the game builds its story through exploration, interactive dialogue and conversations in the car.

Talk, listen and shape the pace
Dialogue moves the narrative forward, while car scenes give Tess and Opal room to talk between locations. You can also fiddle with the radio. These quieter interactions suit a story whose interest lies in what the characters learn about one another as much as in what they uncover.

How does Open Roads present its story?
The publisher describes a visual contrast between detailed first-person environments and hand-animated characters. That pairing gives the environments and the people moving through them distinct visual treatments, rather than making the whole game look uniformly realistic.
Its patient approach is part of the appeal for readers drawn to character-led mysteries: the player spends time looking around and listening instead of relying on combat or fast-paced challenges. If you want an action-heavy road-trip game, the premise alone may suggest a more eventful experience than the described play actually offers.

Is Open Roads worth playing?
Open Roads is a natural fit for players who enjoy exploring story-rich environments, following a family mystery and spending time with imperfect, complicated characters. Its strongest stated ingredients are the investigation into Tess’s family history and the changing bond between Tess and Opal. The emphasis on dialogue and exploration also makes it a more specific recommendation than “a game about a road trip”: the journey is a framework for gradually revealing the past.
