The movie behind the headline is Ex Machina, Alex Garland’s 2015 science-fiction thriller. A January 2, 2026, BGR article reported that it was streaming on HBO Max at that time, but that dated report does not confirm that the film is still available in the U.S. catalog on October 8, 2026. Check HBO Max’s current title listing in your country before subscribing or searching for it.
Why Ex Machina feels unsettling
Rather than building its tension around a conventional robot uprising, Ex Machina places a person inside a test designed to probe whether an artificial intelligence seems capable of thought and consciousness. A24’s official synopsis describes programmer Caleb Smith being selected to spend a week at the remote estate of his company’s CEO, Nathan Bateman, to evaluate an AI experiment. The film’s unease grows from that setup: Caleb is asked to judge the apparent personhood of Ava while the test takes place under the control of Nathan, the powerful man who created it.
That is the film’s fictional premise, not evidence about the capabilities or consciousness of real-world AI systems.
Who made it and who stars?
Alex Garland wrote and directed the 2015 film. A24 names Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander among its stars; the official synopsis identifies their characters as Nathan Bateman, Caleb Smith, and Ava, respectively. A24 also records that the film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2016.
