Oprah Winfrey was in West Texas on April 14, 2025, to support her longtime friend Gayle King as King prepared to fly aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard mission NS-31. Winfrey joined King’s family and friends at the viewing area and described the flight as a personal milestone because King had long been afraid of flying.
Oprah was there in person for Gayle King’s launch
Blue Origin’s NS-31 launched from Launch Site One in West Texas on April 14, 2025. Winfrey attended in person, a detail reported by CBS News and corroborated by the Associated Press, which included her among the launch’s VIPs.
Blue Origin identified King as one of six crew members on NS-31, alongside Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyễn, Katy Perry, Kerianne Flynn and Lauren Sánchez. The company described the mission as the New Shepard program’s 11th human spaceflight. Blue Origin’s mission report records that the flight completed on April 14.
Why Winfrey said the flight mattered to King
At the viewing area, Winfrey was with King’s family and friends. CBS reported that they wore yellow and that Winfrey saw the trip as more than a journey to space because King had a longstanding fear of flying. Winfrey said she had encouraged King to accept the invitation, believing she might regret turning it down.

“I have never been more proud of my friend than today,” Winfrey said before liftoff, according to CBS. She also explained her perspective with the words, “This is bigger than just going to space.” The support was both public and personal: Winfrey framed the launch as King taking on a fear, not simply joining a headline-making flight.
What the NS-31 flight involved
NS-31 was a brief suborbital flight, not an orbital journey around Earth. CBS described roughly 11 minutes from liftoff to landing, including about four minutes of floating. Space.com reported a duration of 10.5 minutes. Those figures describe the approximate full mission; the floating portion was shorter.
