“Oppenheimer’s Ghost” most likely refers to the central figure in Allan Marett’s English-language Noh play Oppenheimer; the available sources do not verify Oppenheimer’s Ghost as the play’s formal title. The play imagines Robert Oppenheimer returning to Hiroshima as a tormented spirit, and asks whether a person burdened by immense suffering can be released from it.
What is Oppenheimer’s Ghost about?
A pilgrim arrives in Hiroshima looking for a temple and two foxes. It is the eve of the anniversary of the atomic bombing. A priest tells the pilgrim that the temple’s story reaches back to a Zen priest condemned to live as a fox for 500 lifetimes. The tale becomes a way into the play’s questions about Robert Oppenheimer, the atomic bomb, and the consequences of human actions. Allan Marett’s plot summary describes the work as an allegory about Hiroshima and the tragedy’s effects beyond the historical event itself.
The priest then reveals that he is Oppenheimer’s ghost. He is condemned to return to Hiroshima and be consumed by its fires. Two local siblings, whose father died in the bombing, challenge the pilgrim’s account and tell a version of the fox story in which the priest is eventually freed. Oppenheimer cannot believe that redemption is possible.
How does the play end?
The pilgrim’s questions lead Oppenheimer to enter the flames willingly. There he encounters Fudô Myô-ô, a Buddhist figure who gives him a sword and a snare and commands him to dance for the liberation of beings from pain. The play leaves unresolved whether Oppenheimer has become Fudô. Its ending offers the possibility of release without presenting redemption as certain.

What does Oppenheimer’s ghost symbolize?
The ghost joins historical responsibility to imagined spiritual punishment. The play does not treat Oppenheimer’s return as a factual haunting; it uses a supernatural figure to explore the burden associated with his role in creating the atomic bomb. Felicity Clark’s review describes him as a shape-shifting ghost trapped in suffering for his contribution to making the weapon. Clark’s review also connects the work to the Hyakujo fox story, karmic cause and effect, and Zen inquiry.
The fox legend provides a contrast to Oppenheimer’s despair. In one telling, the priest’s long punishment can end; Oppenheimer, by contrast, cannot accept that he might be freed. The pilgrim’s questioning and the final dance shift the focus from whether suffering is deserved to whether a being can act toward the release of others. The play keeps the answer open.

Is Oppenheimer’s Ghost a Noh play?
Yes, the best-supported identification is Marett’s English-language Noh play Oppenheimer. Marett wrote the text; Richard Emmert composed the music; Akira Matsui directed and choreographed; and Hideta Kitazawa made the masks. A Sydney Conservatorium of Music production on 30 September and 1 October 2015 used Noh elements including masks, music, dance, and surtitles. The production review describes the form’s spare staging and performance approach.
That restrained, symbolic form places a vast historical catastrophe onstage through a small number of encounters, images, and ritualized actions. The contrast is central to the work’s effect: Hiroshima’s scale is not reproduced naturalistically; instead, the ghost, the flames, the fox story, and the dance carry its moral and spiritual questions.

What is known about the play’s availability?
The sources document a 2015 production and a review that links to a full recording, but they do not establish whether the recording, a script, tickets, or production rights are currently available. They likewise do not verify any current or upcoming staging.
For background on the historical Oppenheimer rather than the play, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin is a biography described by its Google Play Books listing as the inspiration for the film Oppenheimer. It is contextual reading, not the text of Marett’s play.
