On March 4, 2026, ONE PIECE.com announced a campaign marking the manga’s worldwide circulation surpassing 600 million copies. As part of the project, Oda wrote down the secret behind the One Piece and Monkey D. Luffy. The sheet was split in two: an actual-size copy of the upper portion appeared in newspaper advertisements, while the lower portion containing the truth was placed on the seabed with a treasure chest.
The copy shown in the advertisements carried the Japanese prompt “ONE PIECEとは そして モンキー・D・ルフィは” (“What is the ONE PIECE and Monkey D. Luffy…”). That is the question printed on the visible portion, not the answer hidden below. The announcement says the project video shows Oda writing the secret, but does not disclose its contents.
How deep is the treasure chest?
GMA News Online reported on March 4, 2026, that the chest was placed 651 meters below the surface. That figure comes from secondary reporting: the official campaign announcement reviewed for this story describes the seabed placement but does not state a depth.

When will the secret be revealed?
ONE PIECE.com says the truth is planned to be revealed after the manga’s story is complete. This describes a future intention, not a current disclosure or a confirmed date. The campaign announcement presents the project as an invitation to follow the story’s future adventures alongside readers around the world; it does not ask fans to find or retrieve the chest.
What was the campaign celebrating?
The March 4, 2026 announcement marked worldwide cumulative circulation of more than 600 million copies. Shueisha and ONE PIECE.com gave the breakdown as more than 450 million in Japan and more than 150 million overseas. The announcement also noted that manga volume 114 was released that day; that date-specific fact does not establish which volume is newest now.
What happens to the seabed equipment?
The official project notes say installation, recovery and filming methods were considered with researchers from SIP and JAMSTEC, including environmental considerations, and that the seabed equipment is intended to be recovered. The announcement does not provide a detailed recovery schedule or method.
