After Liam Payne died in Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024, aged 31, his four surviving One Direction bandmates—Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan—issued a joint statement of grief and love. Why the tributes carried a shared history
One Direction formed in 2010 from solo contestants on The X Factor and went on hiatus in 2016. The four tributes reflect both that shared history and the individual relationships the members described: Styles focused on Payne’s warmth and energy, Tomlinson on his musicianship and the loss of a brother, Malik on his support, and Horan on their laughter and recent meeting.
