In a public apology reported by TBS and Japan Anime News powered by ORICON on May 21–22, 2024, Furuya acknowledged a relationship with a fan that lasted four and a half years and ended in September 2023. He said he initiated contact, acknowledged one physical incident during an argument, and said he caused the woman to undergo a pregnancy termination. Furuya’s apology followed reporting by Weekly Bunshun. Bunshun’s coverage described a 37-year age difference; that figure comes from the outlet’s reporting, rather than from a population statistic. Weekly Bunshun.
How did Aoni Production respond?
Aoni Production also apologized. In its statement, the agency called the conduct unacceptable and said it reflected “a lack of awareness and responsibility as a voice actor.” It also acknowledged its own failure to provide appropriate guidance and supervision.
