Luffy beat Katakuri by adapting during a grueling fight: he improved his Observation Haki enough to follow Katakuri’s future sight, then used Gear 4 Snake-Man’s fast, changing attacks to pressure him. The story confirms Luffy as the winner, but it does not establish that Katakuri deliberately forfeited.
Why Katakuri was so difficult to hit
Katakuri’s advanced Observation Haki let him anticipate what was about to happen. Combined with his ability to reshape his mochi body, that made many of Luffy’s attacks miss. Luffy could not simply overpower the problem: he had to learn to read his opponent.
The official synopsis for anime episode 870 describes the fight as a back-and-forth contest in which Luffy and Katakuri read one another. That reciprocal dynamic marks the change in the battle: Luffy begins to respond to Katakuri’s anticipation instead of relying only on instinct and immediate reactions. ONE PIECE.com’s episode 870 synopsis identifies this shift and the climactic Gear 4 reveal.
How Luffy overcame Katakuri’s future sight
Under pressure, Luffy’s Observation Haki developed. He became better able to anticipate Katakuri’s moves, narrowing the defensive advantage that had kept Katakuri out of reach. This was not an instant counter or a single trick that made the rest of the fight easy; it was part of a prolonged struggle.

For the climax, Luffy activated Gear 4 and revealed Snake-Man. Its quick punches could accelerate and change direction, creating attack paths that were harder for Katakuri to evade. The tactical pairing mattered: Luffy was learning to read Katakuri while Snake-Man made Luffy’s own attacks less straightforward to read.
What the ending says—and what it does not
Luffy wins the fight, but the conclusion is framed as more than a simple stamina contest. Katakuri’s respect for Luffy gives their final exchange emotional weight. That has led readers to ask whether Katakuri let Luffy win, but the official episode synopsis and publisher catalog do not state that he deliberately conceded. Treat that as an interpretation, not a confirmed explanation of the result.

In the manga, the climactic matchup is in chapter 895, “Luffy the Pirate vs. Sweet Commander Katakuri,” followed by chapter 896, “One Last Thing.” Shueisha lists both in Volume 89; the catalog page consulted is for the Japanese digital color edition. VIZ’s chapter index also lists chapters 895 and 896, though access can vary by location.
The anime’s Snake-Man reveal is covered in episode 870, whose Japanese broadcast date was January 27, 2019. That date is specific to the Japanese broadcast, not a global release date. The official episode synopsis establishes the broad story beats, but it is not a blow-by-blow account; exact fight duration or hit counts are not established by these sources.
