The chapter’s strongest move is joining a long-awaited character reveal to a practical obstacle in the race toward Loki.
What happens in Chapter 1139
As Luffy’s group travels toward the throne room, they encounter a magic circle. A voice startles Road, who mistakes it for a ghost and drops the group. The figure behind the interruption is Scopper Gaban, a former member of the Roger Pirates. The chapter reference also identifies him as Ripley’s partner and Colon’s father. The chapter reference calls the chapter “Mountain-Eater.”
The encounter quickly becomes more than a surprise entrance. Luffy’s group finds the key to Loki’s chains, but Gaban challenges Luffy for it. The key is within reach; moving the Loki plot forward now depends on getting past Gaban.
Why Gaban’s arrival matters
A long-awaited connection to Roger’s crew
Gaban’s appearance gives the Elbaf story a direct link to Roger’s crew without leaving the island’s present-day plot. His connection to Ripley and Colon also places him within Elbaf’s family and community, rather than presenting him only as a figure from the past. That combination makes the reveal feel like a character arrival with local stakes, not just a cameo for longtime readers.

Power lore that raises expectations
Oimo and Kashii describe Gaban’s strength as comparable to Roger and Rayleigh, according to the chapter reference. That comparison quickly establishes why a contest with him matters, but it also risks narrowing the scene to a ranking question: how strong is Gaban? The more consequential question for this chapter is what Luffy will do when someone with that reputation stands between him and the key.
Gaban also mentions the races Dosundada and Longlimbnecks, as reported in the reference. Those names and the strength comparison are translation-sensitive details; readers checking the exact wording should use the licensed English chapter rather than treat a secondary summary as definitive.

The key turns a journey into a contest
Before Gaban’s challenge, the key is a travel objective: find it, then continue toward Loki. His intervention changes the shape of that objective. The group cannot treat the key as a routine handoff, and Luffy has to answer a direct challenge before the route onward can open.
That interruption adds tension because it gives the race to Loki an immediate obstacle, not merely a destination. It also slows forward movement at the moment the plot has made the key tangible. Whether that delay pays off depends on the contest that follows; Chapter 1139 establishes the gate, but does not reveal Loki’s eventual fate.

How the reveal and pacing work together
The magic-circle encounter, Road’s startled reaction, the group being dropped, and Gaban’s identification form a chain of sequential reveals. The chapter then pivots from surprise to the key and challenge, so its new character is tied directly to the next plot problem. This structure gives the appearance a function beyond recognition: Gaban is the person who makes access to Loki contested.
The trade-off is that the chapter spends its momentum on setting up a new face-off instead of resolving the group’s approach to Loki. For readers invested in Roger’s crew and Elbaf’s history, Gaban’s present-day role is a substantial payoff. For readers focused on Loki, the challenge is a postponement—but one that gives the race a concrete stake.
